Members of the Lansing Boys Varsity Swim Team (Jake Sangren, Dan Ravas, David Bandler, and Casey Hagin) participated in the 2007-08 NYSPHSAA Championships. NYSPHSAA stands for "New York State Public High School Athletic Association'. Swimmers with qualifying times in both relay events and individual events gathered at New Hempstead, Long Island, New York for this state finals swim meet.
Lansing's All-American senior swimmer, Jake Sangren, came in second place in New York State in the 100 backstroke event. His time in the State pre-lims on 2/29/08 was 51.21 which was a second place finish. The following day, 3/1/08 – finals, Jake hit the wall in 50.91 seconds to take second place in New York State. This is a AAA time which means 'All-American Automatic'. In both the pre-lims and finals, Jake's times are a new Section IV, IAC league, and Lansing school record.
Head Coach Brian Vaughan said, "The fact that Jake was able to get up there and finish second behind Ricky Henehan (Irondequoit) and put up a nice time was good for him." In the 200 individual medley event, Jake finished third in New York State. His time of 1:55.55 is a AAC time which means 'All-American Consideration'. The AAC time is determined by how many AAA times are recorded nationally in 2007-2008. Jake's new time is also an IAC league record and Lansing school record.
Lansing's 200 medley relay team of Jake Sangren (backstroke), David Bandler (breaststroke), Dan Ravas (butterfly), and Casey Hagin (freestyle) finished sixth in New York State. The team's time was 1:38.94 . When asked about this place finish, Coach Vaughan stated, "I was very pleased with the medley relay. We were seeded 21st going in and ended up sixth. It was really nice to see them come together and drop a lot of time." Assistant Coach Reed Dewey stated, "Our medley relay team came within about 0.20 seconds of All-American status during state finals. It is unbelievable that they went 1:38!"
These are the times each member of this relay team recorded for their leg of the 200 medley relay:
1) Jake Sangren (back - 23.72)
2) Dave Bandler (breast - 28.67)
3) Dan Ravas (fly - 23.85)
4) Casey Hagin (free - 22.70)
In the 200 freestyle relay event, Lansing's team of Casey Hagin, David Bandler, Dan Ravas and Jake Sangren recorded a time of 1:30.35 during State pre-lims on 2/29/08. This finish put the team into the finals on 3/1/08. The team then recorded a time of 1:30.08 in the finals (16th place).
Lansing's Dan Ravas participated in the 100 butterfly event. Dan clocked a time of 55.93 during the State pre-lims on 2/29/08. Coach Dewey stated, "Dan Ravas's fly was fine and not bad considering he's a first-time State competitor." Coach Vaughan said, "Dan will have earned valuable experience competing at the State meet. When he is a senior, he will have many new goals to reach for in the 100 butterfly."
Coach Dewey stated, "The Lansing Boys Varsity Swim Team has been among the best in the nation for several years. They have been number 1 a few times among Class "C" schools. It is very hard to achieve 'All-American' status and Lansing has produced 4 All-American swimmers. Their names are Jake Sangren, Hans Roser, Sterling Gell and Aaron Mychack."
Coach Vaughan added, "Jake Sangren is the second male individual to achieve All-American status in Lansing school sports history. The first male individual to achieve All-American status in a sport was Hans Roser (2007 graduate)."
