ImageIn what has been an up and down past few weeks for Lansing Track and Field, a stellar performance was soon to happen to regain some confidence.  They got just that, Friday night at the “Legends of the Night” Invitational, hosted by Odessa-Montour High School.

Lansing Girls easily outdistanced 9 other IAC and Section 5 teams including rivals Elmira Notre Dame and Trumansburg, scoring 132 points and doing it with authority.  Every single Lansing athlete turned in a huge scoring day or a personal best on the track or in the field.

Senior Pole Vaulter Carol Melice and Freshman Vaulter Lindsay Petry lead the Girls with a 1-2 finish in the event, both clearing 10’ 0”.  This was a personal best for the Freshman Petry as she continues to be a young dominate force in the State.  The duo were also members of the winning 4 x 100m Relay Team (Melice, Petry, Kathryn Hornibrook, Chloe Ryan) easily cruising past 2nd place finisher Odessa-Montour in 52.6.  The relay has definitely come into their own as of late and will be well respected by competitors come IAC championship season.

Senior distance runner Ryann Cretney and Sophomore sprinter Chloe Ryan (4x100m Relay, 3rd in 100m, 3rd in 200m, 3rd in Long Jump) also had huge days on the track.  Cretney won the 1500m and placed 2nd in the 800m (2:27.6), just getting outkicked at the tape by Elmira Notre Dame multi event standout Kelsey Foster.  Cretney continues to gain focus each meet.  I have adjusted her training to focus on a little more speed rather than endurance as that is what she focused on in the winter.  In just 2 short weeks she has looked quicker and fitter than I have seen her.

Also turning in solid performances for the girl’s were Katy Bland (1500m run), Christine Fuchs (800m run) Kathryn Shaw and Tara Miller (3000m Run) and Freshman standout Kathryn Hornibrook (PR in Long Jump 15’1”)

For the Boy’s it seemed they would get a taste of what they got during the Indoor Track and Field season.  Losing to rival Trumansburg by 5 points for the Sectional title Indoors, would turn around to haunt them again today with T-Burg outscoring the boys 127 to 120 for team title honors.  In just a few short months, the cross town Blue Raiders have quickly become a rival with the likes of Newark Valley and Dryden.

Brother’s Henry Potter and Eddy Potter had simply outstanding days to lead the Boys.  They combined to score 50 of Lansing’s 120 points in the middle distance and distance events, with Senior Henry winning 4 events (400m Hurldes, 400m, 4 x 400m Relay and 4 x 800m Relay)  Eddy continues to make a name for himself (running 2 sub 2:04 800m’s) in Section 4.  Hands down the speedy and tireless Sophomore has the potential and will power to become the next Eric Van Ingen (Former standout and 2007 state 800m champ from Marathon) in Section 4.

Relays were just plain dominate for the Boy’s.  The 4 x 800m Relay of (H. Potter, E. Potter, Jon Cleveland, Josh Barber) teamed up to run a season best time of 8:29.95 with Cleveland and Barber running solid personal best legs of 2:11 and 2:08 respectfully and the Potter’s at sub 2:05 apiece.  They easily outdistanced T-Burg and lapped the entire field after that.  This foursome, who were also State Indoor Championship competitors in the event are gearing up for a showdown with rival Newark Valley (for state qualifying honors) in about 5 weeks.  This was the perfect time to gain some strength and confidence in the event as they were only competing against themselves and the clock.

The 4 x 400m Relay of (Eddy Potter, Ken Tillapaugh, Henry Potter and Zach Dwyer) were also winners in a time of 3:41.  We have been waiting for Tillapaugh to find his role in this relay.  He found it today.  The Senior ran a season best 55 second leg.  When he runs well, we run well.
