ImageThe 2008 Lansing varsity volleyball team had a great season. Though it was cut short by a disappointing sectional defeat, the accomplishments of the team were not at all diminished. Lansing finished the season with a 12-4 record. Some highlights include the Tioga tournament early in the season, the second-place finish at the Dryden tournament, a strenuous and exhilarating victory over Watkins Glen that was battled out to the fifth game, one game taken from Dryden during their October IAC rematch, and a long night at sectionals that finished off a fabulous season.

The team will lose five fantastic seniors after this year: Brooke Burke, Desiree Burke, Ashley Schuster, Brittany Wilcox, and Lori McKane. They were a huge part of this year's spirit and talent, and they will be missed next year. The other team members were juniors Kari Fenner, Tory Cutting, Nicolo Gentile, Kristen Beyea, Nikki Gain, and Sunah Bong, and sophomore Tara Miller. The three captains were Brooke, Desi, and Kari.

Each team member brought his or her own special contribution to the team. Brooke was a steady back-row player and an amazing hitter with power, aim, and an ability to get any ball over the net no matter where it was. She was also a strong leader on the team and very observant. Desi was a phenomenal setter who managed to get to the ball almost every time, even if it was on the other side of the court. She also had a great attitude and never got discouraged.

Ashley was a powerful player, whether hitting or serving; she kept racking up the aces every game all season. She could also easily step in as setter when the play necessitated it. Brittany was an astounding hitter who adjusted to any position with grace following her return to Lansing part-way through the season. She was the epitome of sportsmanship and team support, as she cheered her team on without ever a complaint while waiting for her eligibility. Lori, although new to the sport since modified, learned quickly and could play nearly every position.

Kari was an amazing back-row player who never gave up on anything, a good power-tipper at the net, and a strong, consistent server. Tory was a terrific hitter who adjusted well when she switched positions and always had joyful, high spirits. Nicolo, although instructed to stay under the radar so he would be allowed to play, nevertheless shone like a star as an amazing libero who somehow managed to get to almost every ball.

In the front row, Kristen steadily delivered numerous blocks and kills vital to the team's victories, and Tara contributed tips and ever-improving blocks, as well as consistent serves. Nikki was a terrific back-row player who hardly ever missed a pass. Sunah was both a great back-row player and an amazing server.

The team was coached by Amy O'Brien, who is the most dedicated, fun, and amazing coach the team could imagine. She has been known to stay up until three in the morning to figure out what lineup would be optimal for the team's next game. Coach O'Brien was also a great motivator. Whether delivering ultimatums ("it's now or never") or just telling her team to enjoy the sport and play their best, she always knew the perfect thing to say to bring the best ability out of the team. The team is so grateful for all her dedication, sacrifice, and advice.

One trademark of the team was their versatility. Over half of the team could step in and take the set if it was needed for that rotation. Also, the hitters all had the ability to switch to another position, so Coach O'Brien could mix things up if it was to the team's advantage. The lineup did change several times during the season, but it never fazed the players, and they quickly picked up the new rotation each time.

Overall, the team enjoyed a great season. Everyone had positive, enthusiastic attitudes and high spirits.
