ImageThe Lansing Bobcat Football team got back on the winning track with an impressive win against arch rival Trumansburg in the first annual “Battle for the Paddle,” scoring a 28-14 victory.  Jake Whiting led the way offensively carrying the ball 22 times for 160 yards.  The Bobcats had a season high 322 yards rushing on the night.

The Bobcats got on the board early in the game on a 19 yard scoring run by Jon Glennon to grab a 7-0 lead after the successful point-after-try by Ryan Todd.  Less than six minutes later, still in the first quarter, the Bobcats scored again on a Colden Knapp two yard run—the point after failed and the Bobcats had a 13-0 lead.  Things got interesting just before the half when Trumansburgs’ Matt King scored on a 56 yard run tightening the game up at 13-7.

The determined Bobcats would not be denied their chance at claiming a victory as well as the Paddle and came out smoking scoring 15 points in the third quarter to take control of the game.  The first score came on a 17 yard reverse to Craig Esposito on a 4th down and 3, which was followed by a successful point-after-try giving Lansing a 20-7 lead.

The Bobcats final score came a few minutes later when T.J. Cretney carried the ball across the goal line on a one yard quarterback sneak.  Jacob Whiting converted the successful two-point conversion which gave Lansing a commanding 28-7 lead.  Trumansburg capped their scoring on a Lefty McFall 16 yard run with two minutes remaining in the game.

Defensively the Bobcats had a strong overall performance and were led by Colden Knapp who had 13 tackles on the night.

Following the game the Athletic Directors from each school held a ceremony on the field where the captains of Trumansburg presented the Bobcat captains with the ceremonial Paddle.  The Paddle will have the final score commemorating this game etched onto it and it will proudly hang at Lansing High School.  Congratulations to the players on this historic achievement in what hopes to be a long-standing tradition.

Next up for the Bobcats will be a division contest against Southern Springs (Union Springs/Southern Cayuga) at Union Springs on Saturday at 1:30.
