ImageLansing High School Freshman Doug Howarth, 14, recently won the Grand National Cross Country Series (GNCC) 90 Modified (12-15) Class competition.  He placed first in the the ATV Youth championship, the first time he competed in a GNCC competition.

Last year Howarth came in 4th place in Unadilla in the New York series.  That prompted him to try the national GNCC series.  Competitors race in a total of 12 races in the Eastern United States.

Howarth managed to win second place in the first two races at River Ranch, FL and Washington, GA.  He missed one race, but took first place in the other nine races, in Morganton, NC, Union, SC, Hurricane Mills, TN, Somerset, PA, Millfield, OH, Snowshoe, WV, New Berlin, NY, Yadkinville, NC, and St. Clairsville, OH.

GNCC racers come from all over the United States and around the world.  GNC started motorcycle racing in the 1970s, and added ATV racing in 1983.  GNCC courses usually run between 10 to 12 miles for the adult classes and 3 to 5 miles for youth.
