Patrick Judd, a Lansing Modified football player and alumni of the Lansing Small Fry program, honored the team by singing the national anthem prior to the game. The Lansing cheerleaders showed their hard work, enthusiasm and team spirit by welcoming our players onto the field and cheering during the game. The coaching staff worked together as one unit tweaking and adjusting positions, planning out what plays to call, rotating players in and out, and taking care of players with bumps and bruises.
The officials (Steve Murray, Josh Murray, and Greg Christofferson) did a great job keeping the game under control and safe for the players. This crew not only blew the whistle and penalized the players when necessary, but extended their efforts to coach and explain to the players what they did wrong and how to correct it. To put a close to the home game several of the parents put on a delectable, smorgasbord of a tailgate party. There was everything from meatballs to brownies for the players and families to feast on as they reminisced over the game. Collectively, each person shared their talents and support for which the players are very thankful.
The game itself had numerous highlights and new successes. The offensive line (Owen, Jacob, Logan, Jonathan, Neal, Colter, and Zach W.) did a great job blocking for the quarterback (QB), Eric, giving him enough time and protection to throw a couple of long passes to Peter. The offensive line also created holes for Michael, Tyler, Peter, Sam and Jerry to explode through in their debut as running backs. Eric utilized good control and leadership skills to pilot the offense in scoring several touchdowns. Alec had a stellar game with 150 plus rushing yards and three touchdowns. After a long drive from Michael, Peter, and Eric, Tyler scored his first touchdown on a dramatic outside sweep and a last effort dive into the corner of the end zone. Jared stepped in as the (QB) for a few offensive series and finished a drive down the field with a touchdown on a QB keeper.
The kicking squad (Jonathan, Owen and Jared) made five out of five Points after Touchdowns (PAT's) which are worth two points each. The first of which was kicked from the 16 yard line due to the misplacement of the football on the six yard line instead of the three.
The Defensive linemen (Logan, Jacob, Colter, Owen, Neal, Nick, Dominic, Kyle, Jonathan, and Zach P.) all did a great job putting pressure on the opponent's backfield, making several tackles, causing a few fumbles and sacking the QB a few times. Jesse, Jerry, Mickey, Eric, Tyler, Jared and Zach W. all did well as the last line of defense and were involved in many of the tackles as Cornerbacks (CB's) and Linebackers (LB's).
Even though he was on the injured reserve list, Zach D. still found ways to help his teammates by taking care of the game ball, the kicking block, and the water while encouraging and rooting his team on. He should be back on the roster for the next game.
When the game ended, the players lined up on the fifty yard line to shake hands, and the opposing coaches exchanged "good jobs". The Lansing head coach was very proud after the opponents head coach said, "Our players were excited to come to Lansing for a game. Your team plays hard, with discipline, but always displays good sportsmanship. That's the formula for a good team." The Lansing Senior team is very fortunate to have great leadership in the coaches Jim, Greg, Pete and Tim. They not only teach the players about strategy in the game, but also about working as a team, to be safe, striving to always do their best despite sometimes unfavorable circumstances, remembering to acknowledge when someone does something well, to be respectful to their opponents, to not compromise their education (homework being done is a must), to always have each others back on and off the field and most of all to have fun.
The next game is away, this Saturday, October 1st at 7pm and is being hosted by Seneca Falls.
