smallfry1008_120The school progress reports came out on Friday and there are only two more games left of the season for the Lansing Senior Small Fry. It's hard to believe in our tapestry of fall colors, that only weeks ago the players were anticipating the start of school, practicing in 90 degree heat and forming together as a team. This past Sunday, we hosted Candor in a display of competitive fire.

The players and coaches were put to the test this game. The coaches do teach the players game skills, but also provide inspiration, teach sportsmanship and in the case on Sunday, how to take a loss. It's not the goal anyone wanted, but in the words of Vince Lombardi, "It's not whether you get knocked down; it's whether you get back up".

This season, the Senior Small Fry team has had some wins and some losses, but in every case the players have continued to show spirit, teamwork, improvement, commitment, and perseverance - regardless of the score.

On defense, Zach W. had two tackles and intercepted a two point conversion; Colter had a very nice fumble recovery giving Lansing the chance to tie things up, and the defensive backs, (Zach W., Tyler, Peter, Jesse, Jared, Zach D., and Alec), plugged the holes and gave chase to a scrambling offense. Peter also lead the defense with 8 solo tackles, followed by Logan with 7 and Jared, Zach D, and Jacob with 6 tackles each. The defensive line, (Logan, Jacob, Michael, Dominic, Owen, Neal, Nick, Colter, Braydon, Kyle, and Zach P.), had a tough time but stood in there, kept the game close and gave their all out on the field.

Following a few good blocks by the offensive line (Owen, Jacob, Logan, Jonathan, Neal, Colter, and Zach W.), and several great carries by Alec, Jared and Zach D., Eric and his gang scored a touchdown on a QB keeper. Jerry, Sam, and Mickey shadowed the ball carriers and also made couple of good tackles from the safety position. Jared and Zach D. were the heart of the offense rushing for a combined total of 250 plus yards and 1 complete pass. Michael and Alec completed a few drives up the middle for several hard earned yards and Tyler ran the ball well, gaining yards and setting up a TD with a few sweeps to the outside. Zach D. also brought in a 22 yard pass from Jared and added another 15 yards on the ground for a 37 yard TD. The kicking squad (Jonathan, Owen and Jared) kicked another three Points After Touchdown's (PAT's). That puts them at 19 for 20 so far this season.

Some games build records, some build character. The Lansing Seniors are a team with a huge amount of both. They are improving their game intelligence, the younger players are continuing to step it up and their confidence is building. All the players will continue to grow together to enrich their tackling, blocking and ball carrying skills.

George Halas said, "Nobody who ever gave his best regretted it" and there are no regrets. The game was a challenge and when the clock ticked down to zero, the crowd quietly supported the efforts of our team. As the players and coaches returned from the end of game handshake to applause from parents and friends, our cheerleaders stood in a row behind the bench and summed it up perfectly as they raised their pom-poms and repeated this mantra: "We Are Proud Of You. We Are Proud of You!".

The last home game of the season is this Sunday, October 24th at 5pm and will be hosting Moravia.
