volleyball120Lansing’s varsity volleyball team wound up its regular season with wins over Groton and Union Springs, for an IAC season record of 11-3 and a second-place finish behind Trumansburg.  Post-season play starts next week (schedule TBD).

Lansing’s 3 seniors, Karina Warkentin, Breanna Brann, and Tara Miller, were honored in a ceremony before the last home match against Groton on 10/21.  Brann’s serving opened the match.  It seemed fitting that a Miller dig and a Brann set led to Lansing’s first kill, by Hannah Armstrong, 3-2. Although Lansing lost several points to defensive and communication errors, these were more than offset by an ace by Warkentin, 4 aces by Armstrong, kills by Amber Howser and Carolyn Prybyl, and a decisive block by Prybyl, 15-8.  Solid defense by Warkentin, Miller, and Kelsey Thomas combined with 6 more Lansing kills to close out the set handily, 25-18.

Lansing took an early lead in the 2nd set, again with Prybyl blocking and Prybyl, Armstrong, Howser, and Brann scoring on attack.  Lansing’s serves dominated the set.  Armstrong served 9 consecutive points and Howser followed with 8, swiftly finishing the set with an ace, 25-6.  The 3rd set was a different story.  Despite digs by Nicole Washburn and others, Lansing errors were rampant, and Lansing only earned 6 points -- Brann and Miller each delivering 2 aces and 1 kill, 14-25.

Lansing got back in the game in set 4.  Miller created a lead with 2 kills and 3 aces, 8-3, and joined Brann, Thomas, and Armstrong in defending it.  Prybyl added 3 aces, Howser 2, and Vanessa Corey 3 digs before Miller placed a tip into an unguarded spot by the net, assisted by Armstrong, 19-9.  The match ended 3-1 with Armstrong’s 10th ace, 25-14.

Miller had 7 kills (41%), 5 aces, 11 service points, 15 digs, 1 assist; Brann 6 assists, 3 aces, 6 service points, 2 kills, 3 digs; Warkentin 1 ace, 4 service points, 1 dig, 5 serve receptions; Prybyl 4 kills (44%), 2 blocks, 4 aces, 10 service points, 1 dig; Armstrong  8 assists, 10 aces, 19 service points,3 kills, 1 block, 4 digs; Howser 7 aces, 11 service points, 2 kills; Thomas 5 digs, 2 kills, 1 ace, 3 service points; Washburn 4 digs; Sally Stoyell 1 service point, Corey 1 dig.

The Bobcats traveled north for their last IAC match against the Union Springs wolves on 10/25.  In the opening set, Thomas scored Lansing’s first 2 points, a kill assisted by Stoyell and an ace 2-1. These were followed by Lansing attack errors, which produced an unexpected deficit against their winless foe, 3-4.   Howser then demonstrated her versatility, setting Miller for a back-row kill.  Prybyl extended the lead by killing a Union Springs overpass, and Howser added a kill assisted by Armstrong, 10-5.  Two kills by Shanna Shaff helped Lansing double its lead, finishing 25-13 with kills by Thomas and Prybyl.

In the 2nd set, Union Springs pressured Lansing with tough serves and a few well-placed attacks.  The wolves generated a 3-point lead twice before Amber Ryan’s 3 aces and 6 service points reversed the point spread, putting Lansing ahead 14-10.  Lansing subsequently gained 11 points to their opponents’ 4.  The set ended with 2 Howser kills, assisted by Stoyell, and 3 Miller aces, 25-14.

Aside from a couple Miller aces, at the start of the 3rd set the score changed largely as a consequence of players’ errors.  Shaff scored Lansing’s first kill, assisted by Armstrong off a dig by Howser, 8-7.  Washburn teed up the next point, passing to Armstrong for a Miller kill, 10-8.  Shaff then killed a Union Springs overpass, 11-8.  However, Union Springs aced a couple serves and gained a 1-point advantage before Miller tied the set 12-12 with a block point.  The game remained close until Miller gained 6 service points and Howser set Prybyl for 2 kills and Miller for 1, 23-15.  Stoyell added a kill and Armstrong an ace to finish the match 25-15.

Howser tallied 6 assists, in addition to 4 kills (40%), 2 aces, 6 service points, and 1 dig.  Prybyl had 5 kills (56%), 1 ace, 3 service points; Miller 6 kills (46%), 7 aces, 15 service points, 3 digs; Armstrong 9 assists, 1 kill, 4 aces, 8 service points; Stoyell 4 assists, 1 kill, 1 ace, 3 service points; Shaff 4 kills (67%);  Thomas 3 kills, 2 aces, 6 service points, 1 dig; Ryan 3 aces, 5 service points; Washburn 2 digs, Corey 1 dig.
