xc1 120The Lansing Varsity Boys/Girls Cross Country teams had a very successful start to the season last week. It will be an interesting year this year as we have a young team that is hard working and has already posted some good times for the year. The year started out with the team traveling to Thomas Edison for an IAC divisional meet against SVE, Newark Valley, Groton, Thomas Edison, and Moravia. It was a balmy day for a cross country meet but the teams were up to the challenge on a tough 2.9 mile course.

The girl’s team started things out on the course and were led by seniors Shanna Swanson and Blair Wigsten who finished 5th and 6th overall. Then they were followed by a close group of runners, Lauren Phlegar, Anna Kirkwood, Rachel Brock, and Olivia Longhouse who finished (16, 17, 19, 22nd) overall.

Then the boys took to the course with senior Cameron Bruce leading not only them, but the entire race and finishing in 1st overall. Cameron was then followed by Michael Cree (15th), Max Stammer (18th), Dyland Bland (21st), Brad Lapar (27th), John Schafer (40th), and Patrick Alexander (42nd). Overall it was a great day of running by all the teams at the meet.

Next the Lansing team went to the V.V.S. Invitational held in Verona, New York. The meet would feature some of the best teams in the state, as it is the site of the 2011 NYS Championship race November 12th. The Lansing boys and girls were put into the 5th pool of teams featuring over 150 runners from around the state. The girls were led by Blair Wigsten who finished 45th, then a close competitive finish by the rest of the team in 105th, 107th, 108th, and 110th.

The girl’s team improved on their previous race times by 30 seconds or more in the race. The boys were next to run, and were in one of the fastest races of the day. The boys were led by Cameron Bruce who finished in 3rd (9th overall on the day) followed by Michael Cree who broke 20 minutes for the first time in his career with a time of 19:52 (70th). Then the rest of the boys finished nicely in 82nd, 106th, 122nd, 186th, and 187th overall.
