This year, it was Lansing’s turn. On March 30th eleven teams from each school gathered in the Lansing High School Gym for a double-elimination tournament. Of course, having already experienced the event, both Student Councils brought new ideas for its improvement. Referees were brought from both schools, concessions were sold in the cafeteria, and 'Champion' shirts were created for the winning team.
At 7:30pm, peers, fellow players, and parents filled the stands as the first games began. Teams such as 'The Average Joes', 'Get Hit or Run', and even 'The Below Average Joes' faced-off simultaneously as two courts divided the gym. The initial games often left one-on-one situations towards the ending of each round, and thus the crowd was left either on their feet or in a silent disappointment after the results.
There was also the continuation of the annual 'Teacher’s Game', where a team of staff members from both schools would play towards the end of the tournament. This year, the Lansing staff brought the student body to deafening roars of encouragement, but the Trumansburg staff ultimately won.
In terms of students, Lansing would emerge the victor. Students and supporters cheered as our home teams filled the finals and semi-finals, to the point where the last game was played between two Lansing teams.
Despite having a focused desire to win throughout the event, the two schools did not leave with bitter feelings. In fact, during the ice cream social that was held afterwards, students from both Lansing and Trumansburg gathered in the cafeteria and talked collectively as the 'Champion' shirts were given out.
