The 10th Anniversary of the Cub Club during the Cornell Women's Hockey game vs. #3 ranked St. Lawrence University at 4:00 p.m. at Lynah Rink on February 1.  The anniversary of the nationally recognized mentorship program that matches Cornell players with Tompkins Girls Hockey Association beginners will be commemorated during the two intermissions between periods.  In addition, a reception will follow the game giving past and current members of the Cub Club, both Cornell players and TGHA members, a chance to socialize.

During the program's first ten years, four Cornell players have been recognized by the National Hockey Humanitarian Award Committee for their involvement in the Cub Club. Erin Schmalz ’98 was one of 5 national finalists for that award.  Colette Bredin ’00, Danielle Bilodeau ’01 and Kelly Pike ‘03 also received awards for their work with the Cub Club. Bredin, who is an assistant coach at University of New Hampshire, is still in contact with her “little sister” Chelsea Traunstein, who is a college sophomore.

Their Cub Club relationship was highlighted in a USA Hockey Magazine article written by Cub Club co-founder and published author Megan Shull.  Shull grew up skating with TGHA before playing for Cornell and pursuing advanced studies in adolescent psychology.  She developed the Cub Club concept with the Cornell coaching staff, Julie Sasner and Carol Mullins.  Mullins, who is currently the president and volunteer coach with TGHA, promotes the 'big sister little sister' relationship.  TGHA members also take turns as 'stick girl' for the Cornell team at their home games. One dones a bear cub costume and skates between periods while the ice is being resurfaced.
