posticon A Remarkable Runner

Kevin HowellKevin HowellTwo years ago Kevin Howell won his first race, the Fillmore 5K, in 21 minutes and 25 seconds.  The remarkable thing is that this was the first race he ever competed in.  He not only won first place in the ten and under age group but he beat the record for his age group at that race.  Kevin currently holds the 3rd and 4th grade mile records at Lansing.  He's made All American at the Junior Olympics in cross country in 2004 and Track in 2005.  A few weeks ago he qualified for the Junior Olympics in track in the 3000m.  He has accomplished this in spite of being out of the running for a good part of the year due to growing pains.

It started when Kevin saw varsity runner Nate Lockett go by while attending the after school program.  He asked then coach Jason Eade whether he could come up with the team.  "Then Kevin started managing the Boys Cross County team and set the third year mile record for Lansing, then in fourth grade he broke the fourth grade mile record," says his mother Debra.  "That still stands.  Nate and the other guys on the team told Kevin, 'You have to run, Kev.'  Eventually we heard about the Ithaca United Track Club."  Kevin joined when he entered fifth grade and earned 'All American' at the Junior Olympics Nationals in cross country the same year.

posticon En Guard! Lansing Kids Fencing Class

Linda WyattLinda WyattWho hasn't watched a swashbuckler movie and become entranced by the sword play?  Errol Flynn used to smile confidently while he thrust and parried as if it were merely a game he enjoyed.  This August Lansing kids will get a taste of fencing in a two week course offered by the Lansing Recreation Department.  It's being taught by Linda Wyatt, Prevot d'Armes of the Classical Fencing studio near Ithaca College.

"What we hope is that, by the end of the ten weeks they will know whether or not this is something they really want to do," says Wyatt.  "We tend to attract people who don't have a lot of athletic experience, and specifically young women who read books that have swords in them, and they want to learn how to do it."   Learning fencing turns out to be different from what they expect.  "Fencing, is very unnatural," Wyatt explains, because your natural impulse is to cringe.  "Everything you do has to be trained in from the beginning, and because of that people with a lot of athletic experience think they'll have an advantage, but they don't."

A few times a year plastic wildlife has much to fear when the LBH Archery Club holds a 3-D shoot.  LBH (formerly Lansing Bow Hunters) attracted about 80 archers to the most recent shoot at their club grounds on Salmon Creek Road last Sunday.  Shooters traversed two courses in the woods, each with 15 targets.  "We have two 15-target 3-D courses," club President John Heuther explains.  "Anything from skunks to elk.  Small targets, big targets.  Ranges are, depending on the class you shoot in, open is out to 50 yards, bow hunters out to 35 yards, women's 25 yards.  We've got cubs who shoot 10 to 12 yards and youth at 25 yards."

ImageTuesday (6/13) evening five American League teams came to the Lansing Town Ball fields to test their baseball skills.  The 5th and 6th graders participated in Lansing Recreation Department's Skills Competition Day, where they tried out their baseball skills in six stations.  50 kids went through six stations, testing different skills at each one.  Some tested individual skills, others stressed teamwork.

The first event placed one player at each base.  They had to throw the ball from base to base, making sure that the ball was thrown to each base in the field.  If a player missed the ball he had to retrieve it and touch his base before throwing to the next player.

This summer two Recreation Department camps will teach Lansing kids fundamentals of soccer and basketball.  Led by Adam Heck, the camps run for one week each, using high school athletes as coaches and mentors to 4th through 10th graders.  "We're trying to teach all fundamentals," says Heck.  "We're trying to target the kids that are still in the early development stages and teach them about the game and give them the basic skills as they advance through their own development."
