Last Saturday (8/6) The Boys Varsity Soccer team and the Girls Varsity Swimming and Diving teams were busily working as teams, but not playing their sports. They were raising money to help pay for equipment they need during the year. Coach Adam Heck's team had a chicken barbecue at the town hall parking lot, with parents and team mates cooking chicken and selling it under a tent they had set up.

The Lansing Central School Athletic Hall of Fame is getting ready to choose new inductees. The program has honored Lansing players since 1998. The Hall of Fame is an actual Hallway in Lansing High School. If you go in the main entrance and take a right, then go past the gymnasium and take a left you will find the plaques honoring the players beautifully displayed on the wall. "It's really become something," says Marty Christopher, current chair of the committee that administers the program.

posticon Tackling Small Fry Football

This summer the Recreation Department has had some trouble filling the Small Fry Football Senior team.  The program begins August 22 and has a Junior and Senior team.  The junior team is made of grades 4 and 5 with some 3rd graders.  The Senior team is made of 6th and 7th graders.

Recreation Director Stephen Colt thinks there are many factors contributing to the Senior team not filling.  7th graders can play in the Small Fry program or in modified football, so the pool of possible players is split between the two.  Also "there is a dip in the population of those teams, and there are more girls than boys," he said.  While girls can play, more boys are attracted to football.

August 10 -- If you have driven past the town hall this week you've probably seen soccer campers swarming over the town ball fields. Soccer Camp is a Recreation Department success. Led by Adam Heck for the past eight years, the program has grown from only 28 players to 150 this summer.

This year the program saw a jump in attendance from 135 in the last two years to 150. 15 coaches help Mr. Heck, a Middle School physical education teacher who coaches the Boy's Varsity Soccer team at Lansing High School. He also coaches Intramural Basketball, Handball, and Floor Hockey. "I love it," he said in a break on Wednesday. "A lot of the coaches are ex-players of mine, so it's great to have them back and spend the week with them."

Summer recreational sports - that is hardly the phrase that one would think could draw community strength and successful competition into the same sentence.  In Lansing, however, recreation, sports, accomplishment and community involvement come in the same package, which helps to promote some of the most successful teams in the area to even higher levels of competition.  Each year, adults and youth alike participate in summer baseball and softball leagues which travel around the region to compete in tournaments throughout the summer.

This entirely community-run league embodies community in its running - parents take the time out of their schedules to run practices and attend games while youth gain the opportunity to participate throughout the summer in a sport they love.  When children grow out of their gloves and move onto larger ones in larger places, they give back to the community what they can.
