nyyi120Nosa with Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack and Mrs. VilsackA platform to national and international opportunities for local high schoolers and a chance to inspire future leaders, the New York Youth Institute (NYYI) has a limited time to raise funds for this year’s conference. Through the “Hunger Fighters” crowdfunding campaign with PEAKS, NYYI hopes to continue to prepare the next generation of leaders to engage in agricultural research and combat food supply issues.

Working alongside Cornell University’s International Programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the New York Youth Institute provides opportunities for educational and career development for local high school students interested in combatting issues related to food and agriculture. Students submit a written essay and presentation that is judged by experts in food industries and international development, and a handful are chosen to attend a nationwide conference and be in the running for a handful of prestigious internships.

International issues pertaining to agriculture and food supply have become increasingly important to address. Since New York is an agricultural state, these local students have potential to offer ideas about future food supply and ways to combat world hunger. Funds raised from this campaign will expose these students to internship opportunities and chances to meet inspiring leaders in the field. These are opportunities to empower and inspire young leaders so that they are equipped to help develop strategies to address these issues.

International Programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences seeks to address the challenges of development and food security through teaching, research, and outreach programs. The New York Youth Institute is a one day conference that gathers together promising high school students and exposes them to leaders in the fields of science, industry, and policy. PEAKS is a social justice crowdfunding platform that provides changemakers with the tools necessary to successfully carry out campaigns and is administered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County.
