The 'Circle of Courage' room in which the race took place was packed tight with Cubs and family members. The youngest boys, the Tigers, who are in first grade raced first. Local Boy Scout Kirklyn Golden from Troop 48 started each race:
"Are you ready to race?"
Everyone joined in:
"Five, four, three, two, one" and then the start gate opened. In less than four seconds, each race was over. Kirklyn and his brother Kaydin Golden helped transport the cars back to the start of the track. All the cars raced in each lane of the track for total fairness and to give each Cub Scout's car five different races. At the culmination of the Tiger racing, trophies were awarded to those in first, second or third place. Whilst the computer calculated the average times, jokes were shared by leaders and Cubs. Elijah Littlejohn from Lansing Pack 48 came in third behind Tigers from Pack 34 (Newfield) and Pack 85 (Ellis Hollow).
The Wolf Cubs were next to race. Lansing had two Cubs competing in the largest field of the day with 16 racers, Aaron Freemantle and Nathaniel Ronsvalle. Aaron came in third with an average speed of 3.4372 seconds after the Pack 34 and Pack 85 (Homer) boys. Nathaniel came a very close fourth, sadly just missing out on a trophy.
A Scout leader helping with the timing system was inspired by the actions of the crowd to tell a Star Wars joke: "What's the difference between Han Solo's boogers and his best friend? Nothing. They're both Chewie"!
Lansing was represented in the races for third grade boys, the Bear Cubs, by Kegyn Golden, Nicholas Hwang and Hunter Kozlowski. Kegyn's car sped down the track, finishing with the fastest average speed of the day at 3.3919 seconds. Nicholas, racing a pink pig, came in second whilst Hunter came in 7th place, a creditable performance for his first year of Pinewood Derby.
In the second last group to race, the fourth grade boys race was won by Pack 3 from Trumansburg. Scott Coonrod from Pack 48 came in 2nd with a member of the newly-formed Pack 102 from Virgil edging out Pack 48's Dominick Ronsvalle into 4th place.
The fifth grade boys, had two representatives from Lansing who have now crossed over to the Boy Scout Troop. They were still eligible to race in their last Cub Scout Pinewood Derby and Jack Negley finished second whilst Walter Read came in fourth.
