A new rector arrives at St. John's Episcopal Church this Sunday, March 25. After conducting a national search, St. John's is welcoming the Reverend Megan Laura Castellan, formerly the associate rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Kansas City, Missouri. She will be the first woman to be installed as the rector of St. John's, which in 2022 will celebrate the 200th anniversary of its founding.

Rev. Castellan has a Master of Divinity in theology from The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church, New York, New York; and a Bachelor of Arts (cum laude) in religious studies and English literature from The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia.

She is no stranger to the joys and challenges of serving a large parish in a downtown church. St. John's hosts Loaves & Fishes, the largest feeding ministry in the area, as did Rev. Castellan's parish in Kansas City.

In addition to serving as a priest, Rev. Castellan also is a busy writer. She writes for Lent Madness and 50 Days of Fabulous (both part of the Forward Movement publication). Her writing has appeared in The Episcopal Café and the Kansas City Star, The Toast and McSweeney's. For the last two years, she has published an active blog, Red Shoes, Funny Shirt (redshoesfunnyshirt.com).

"Early in the search process, we knew we wanted to find someone 'who loves the people.' We believe we have found such a person in Mother Castellan. We have faith that, as rector of St. John's, she will forge a strong bond among the members of our parish and the greater community of Ithaca. We believe she will be able to engage the diverse viewpoints among all of us," said Senior Warden Michael Roman.
