September 9, 2019 New Roots celebrated its 10-year anniversary with a community meeting presentation from local leaders of the Sunrise Movement, who are inviting students to join their youth-led climate justice movement with a nation-wide school strike on September 20, 2019, three days before the UN Climate Summit in NYC.
New Roots Charter School opened on September 9, 2009 inspired by the vision "to empower young people as citizens and entrepreneurs that create just, democratic communities, and thriving green economies that restore the natural world that sustains us." According to founder Tina Nilsen-Hodges, the school's mission and vision aligns with the Sunrise Movement, a youth movement to stop climate change and create millions of good "green" jobs in the process.
Young people and adults will strike all across the US and world on September 20th to demand transformative action be taken to address the climate crisis. Students from the New Roots school community and millions more across the country will take to the streets to demand a right to a sustainable future.
A public high school authorized by the State University of New York, New Roots was one of the first whole-school models of education for sustainability at the secondary level in the U.S. Today, New Roots is recognized as one of ten leading "green" schools nationally by the Green Schools National Network.
