The layout of the library will be almost completely changed. What was previously the back of the library will now be the entrance, with cement stairs leading up to the door. Acting as the lead man for the project is Mr. Dawson, who was working on the front steps. He explained the process for making the steps: 1) Stacking cement blocks. 2) Fill the blocks with concrete. 3) Add the finishing touches. He currently has finished stacking the cement blocks, and will soon be filling them in.
The new front of the library with Mr. Dawson working on the stairs
One of the outside projects is applying E.I.F.S (a stucco type material) on the walls of the new expansion. Currently the workers are waiting for the Mason to begin work on it.
Inside the library is a wide hallway that goes through from the front to the back of the building. Immediately as you walk in on your left will be the Children's room, where all the children's books and activities will be. On your right is the librarian's office with a window so that he/she can supervise everyone walking in. Also on the right is a handicap elevator that leads to the basement level. Along the entrance walls will be reference computers.
The adult book room with the old wall torn down
As you walk along the wide hallway, you come to where the old building starts. The old wall down the middle is torn down, so the two rooms are now one large room for the adult books. The front (soon to be back) will still be the same as it was. Currently on the project are the two electricians Robert Nelson and Anthony Skinner who were finishing the wiring so that the dry wall can be started (hopefully by the 1st week of October).
While construction was happening, a historical artifact was uncovered. When taking down the wall next to the old check out desk, the worker's unearthed a large slate chalkboard with writing still on it (about as wide as the wall itself!). The board dates from when the building had been used as an old schoolhouse. Unfortunately, the chalkboard could not be taken out intact, but another board was uncovered that is complete.
The library's new layout will work well for what the library hopes to achieve.
