If you wander into the 4H Teen Press Office at the New York State Fair you are likely to find Lansing Village resident Staci Chen at a computer. Ms. Chen, 16, is an editor at the press office this year, working on stories that teenaged reporters write about 4H activities at the fair.
She arrived on Sunday and is staying until Thursday, working at the press office part of the time and acting as a teen ambassador as well. In that role she interacts with 4H members from around the state.
Coordinator Megan Tiff signed her up for the press office experience. Of her charges she says, "They're so well spoken. I'm so proud of them."
So far the stories Ms. Chen has edited have focussed on 4H events at the fair. "We're getting coverage on things you don't know about so people will say, 'Next year I'll go visit that.'"
"I've been in 4H for as long as I can remember," Ms. Chen says. "But I haven't been really active until recently." She has participated in the horticulture club and dog training. This is her first time trying journalism. She says she is doing it to expand her horizons. "I'm enjoying it so far. I'll have to look into the school paper," she says. Then she gets back to the computer, an editor at work.
