ImageThe SPCA of Tompkins County has received a $1,500 grant from the Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation. The grant is designated for the shelter’s Helen Milks Francis Spay/Neuter Assistance Fund (HMF), which helps the SPCA provide low-cost spay or neuter surgeries for the cats or dogs of qualified Tompkins County residents.

Over 1,000 County residents have been assisted by the HMF Fund already this year, and the program continues to grow, with strong emphasis on reducing the overwhelming problem of pet overpopulation and unwanted litters of both cats and dogs.

The Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation reports that the grant is made possible though the sale of their full-sized Bearemy Kennel Pals®. One dollar from the sale of each plush animal is donated through the program to domestic pet programs including animal shelters and others. Their grants “allow the Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation to advance its mission of making life more bearable for children, families, and pets, who are in need of a helping paw.”

The SPCA of Tompkins County was founded in 1902 to protect animals from cruelty and neglect. Since then, the SPCA of Tompkins County has evolved into an organization that shelters lost, homeless and victimized companion animals while offering educational and advocacy programs to our community. The agency combats chronic pet overpopulation, finds homes for all adoptable animals and provides resources for pet guardians to strengthen and celebrate the human-animal bond.
