Aurora, New York—Wells College President Lisa Marsh Ryerson has joined the Board of Champions for the Finger Lakes hub of the Empire State STEM Learning Network. As a member of the board, she will contribute her knowledge and experience to the organization’s goals of increased collaboration between schools, business, community and government in support of science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.

“Here in the Finger Lakes region we have an especially rich and diverse mix of educational institutions and a wealth of knowledge,” she said in an announcement posted to the STEM blog.  “Our challenge, of course, is to translate our commitment to STEM education, our capacity for excellent teaching, and our potential for transformative learning, to broad and effective action.”

The Finger Lakes hub is an extension of the Empire State STEM Learning Network, a state-wide organization that promotes education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics as well as developing important partnerships between educational institutions and business and community organizations. The STEM Network provides resources such as grants and professional development to teachers and assists students and their parents with awards and scholarships, summer programs, tutoring and other guidance. STEM mentoring programs and special events provide valuable services to young scholars in K–12 institutions and promote innovative instruction in the sciences.

The Empire State STEM Learning Network was formed in June of 2010; the Finger Lakes hub was announced at St. John Fisher College last May. The Board of Champions collaborates to promote opportunities and connections in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Its members include a number of higher education administrators, business leaders and other professionals from the region.
