Rock climbing camp will be run at the Lindseth Rock Climbing Wall, the largest indoor rock climbing wall in North America. The archery camp will be offered in the indoor facility at Klein's Archery in Dryden. Both camps are scheduled for February 18 through the 22nd.
"They do a great job over there," says Recreation Director Steve Colt. "It was a popular summer program."
On Monday and Tuesday of the school break Robin McColley will offer karate camp. The two one-day sessions will be themed: 'integrity' and 'being an upstander, not a bystander'. While the timing is calculated to help working parents with child care during the school vacation, it is also an opportunity to be exposed to karate for the first time, or for current karate students to get some extra time.
"It's almost like child care with a karate theme," Colt says. "That is for ages six and up. No previous experience is needed. Hopefully it will turn people on to the great things she does."
Lansing Athletic Director and varsity basketball coach will reprise his annual basketball camp for grades 3 through 9. That will be a three day afternoon camp. In the past it has attracted between 20 and 40 players.
Starting March 2nd Shelly Matheny and a group of other instructors will offer Saturday morning swim lessons for grades K through 4. Colt calls it a laid-back lesson to help kids improve their skills and feel more compfortable in the water.
Finally, the department is offering an introductory girls lacrosse program. It is planned for the high school gym with scaled down equipment, and headed by Brian Ivery. Colt has tried offering lacrosse in the past, but couldn't attract enough players. This year it's for girls only, which he hopes will reach critical mass needed to make the program go.
"We're going to run it Tuesdays and Thursdays in the month of March," Colt says. "It's a fun game. Brian brings a lot of energy to it. It will be a little different because it's inside. They'll learn the basics."
