psrb sidepanelThe Tompkins County Solid Waste Division has installed its fourth public space recycling bin in Ithaca's Stewart Park, along the Cayuga Waterfront Trail. It features receptacles for both trash and common single-stream recyclable items like cans, bottles and newspapers. The bins are serviced on a regular basis by Casella Waste Systems, and will be monitored frequently by Solid Waste Division staff. The City removed other garbage receptacles in Stewart Park once the public space bins were installed near the small pavilion and playground.

"We've found an increasing number of communities are focused on expanding recycling opportunities to public settings such as streetscapes and parks," said Nancy Webster, an Assistant Recycling Specialist for Tompkins County. "The more successful programs are those that provide options for both recycling and trash."

ipei harps120Last school year, members of the Belle Sherman Mariachi Ensemble received a brand new addition to their band. A Teacher Grant from the Ithaca Public Education Initiative (IPEI) provided the means for their teacher Cindy Daly to purchase harps, contributing to multicultural musical enrichment for Belle Sherman Elementary School students.

Mariachi, Mexican folk music, often features harps as a standard instrument. The opportunity to learn to play the harp is now offered to fourth and fifth-graders at Belle Sherman allowing them to explore the genre in its entirety. The grant provided funding for a community partner, Lisa Craig Fenwick, as well as purchasing harp cases, an extra set of strings, small accessories, and the instrument.

Oscar   Hello! I'm Oscar, and I'm looking for a quiet home with gentle people. I get a little overwhelmed by lots of new people and places, but once I know you, I'll show you my silly side. I love scratches, cuddling, and already know a few basic tricks. My previous person says I'm very "loyal" and love cuddling - wouldn't that be nice for the cold Ithaca winters?!? Because I am easily startled, a family with teenagers or an adult only home would be my preference. A yard where I can run around with you would be wonderful too! I get a little stressed around other dogs and because of this, I would be happiest as the only dog in the home. Do I sound like a good match for you?

dearmargaretDear Margaret:  I'm in my late 40's and think I may be having a "mid-life crisis." I cut my hair, got a piercing, and came close to divorcing my husband. Do you know if these sound like typical symptoms and what I can do about it?

posticon Within Reach - Hidden (and not so hidden) Waterfalls

Within reach September 9, 2004, and I was feeling my way along Rt 96 in the driving rain; the 3'rd remnant of a hurricane in a week, and I wondered what in the world I could do today. I was taking the kids to Interlaken to drop them off at school, bemoaning the fact that I wouldn't be able to go out and play. The weather just wasn't cooperating for photographing the rose gardens (MY kind of play) on Cornell's campus, and my day's plan had just washed down the drain.

With the storm clouds outside (and inside) the car we crossed the bridge at Taughannock Creek. The water was angrily clawing at the bottom of the bridge. The torrent ate at the sides of the creek, moving boulders and making decisions about what it would move next.

Ludlowville Park PavillionThe Lansing Lions Club officially dedicated the new Ludlowville Park Pavilion to the Town of Lansing last Friday at their annual Ice Cream Social.  The pavilion was dedicated in memory of Jim and Phyllis Howell.  The event coincided with the final Friday Concert s in Ludlowville Park event featuring the band Second Chance.

"It was Jim's idea to have an ice cream social, but it wasn't developed until after he passed away," says Lansing Lions Club President Scott Bishop.  "Phyllis and Noni Krom got it started, and we thought it appropriate to dedicate the pavilion to Jim and Phyllis Howell.  Jim was a charter member of the Lion's Club and a member for over 50 years.  The Howells have been icons in this community for generations."

posticon Within Reach - Texas Roadhouse

Within reach Raising 5 children, we had certain restaurants we would use to develop their table manners. The beginner place was always Chinese Buffet. When the kids master "polite and can keep the food fairly well on the plate or in their mouth without losing substantial quantities between", it's time for a step up.

I think I found one.

We've watched construction of the Texas Roadhouse since they first broke ground. Quasi-amazed at the progress and the precision with which it arose out of the Meadow St dust, I imagined that it must be a full sized erector set or the construction version of a paint-by-number set.

posticon Dear Margaret - Hurt by Mom

dearmargaretDear Margaret:  I’m known by my friends to be emotionally strong, and am also in a profession that requires a good deal of inner strength. My problem is that almost every time I get together with my mother, whom I love dearly, she accuses me of being overly sensitive. She has a way of zeroing in on something that will hurt my feelings, and when it does, she says I’m just too sensitive. I always deny that I’m too sensitive, and she scoffs at me. I want to continue a good relationship with her, but I can’t figure out how to get past this. I want our relationship to move beyond this. It’s beginning to feel like a game.
