llh kendal 120Over 60 people attended a public information session on May 11 at Kendal at Ithaca to learn about Love Living at Home (LLH), a new 501(c)(3) nonprofit, recently opened in Tompkins County to help older adults live at home as long as possible.  LLH follows a national model that seeks to improve access to services, increase socialization and civic engagement, and strengthen a sense of community among its participants.  These virtual villages are a consumer driven strategy to support successful aging at home.

"Love Living at Home is not a place on a map - it is a gateway to relationships and resources for older adults who desire to live in the homes and neighborhoods they love. We are a welcoming network of people helping people. Our programs enrich life and forge connections for new friendships. When you need peace of mind, support is one phone call away," LLH board chair Kathleen M. Garner said.

posticon It Takes A Global Village of Lansing Park

Global Village ParkThe Village of Lansing may feel quite local, but Village trustee Gerry Monaghan says it is actually a global village.  He means it quite literally.  Monaghan has counted 26 languages spoken by residents of the Village and the immediately surrounding area.  To bring attention to this phenomenon, he has spearheaded an art project with DeWitt Middle School students at the Lansing Village Community Park on Uptown Road.

"There's an after school program here at the Small Mall," Monaghan says.  These kids say, 'My family's from Hungary,' 'My family's from China,' 'My family is from Mongolia,' 'My family is from Uzbekistan,' 'We're German,' 'We're from Brazil,' 'We speak Portuguese,' 'We speak Spanish' -- it really is, in every sense of the word, a global village.  That is why this park is so well qualified to be the subject of Global Village Park."

The Rotary Club of Ithaca introduced five individuals who have recently joined the service club. These community members volunteer in Tompkins County and bring professional experience from the business and not-for-profit sectors. Ithaca Rotary's motto is "Service Above Self." Membership is open to all who share in this belief; new members are accepted year-round.

"The Ithaca Rotary Club is delighted to welcome these individuals," said Rotary Membership Chair Ron Provus. "Our members come from all walks of life and have a wide variety of interests to match those of Rotary. As members of Ithaca Rotary, individuals give of their time and skills to positively impact the needs of our community."

posticon Dear Margaret - Don't Want To Date

dearmargaretDear Margaret: I was widowed about a year ago, and my friend and daughter told me I should sign up on an online dating service, which I did.  Almost immediately I had a date with a man that seemed such a gentleman, was charming, and in the process of a divorce. We had a lovely first date, after which I began receiving a barrage of texts and phone calls from him. After the second date, he was sending texts with pictures showing what dresses I would look good in and suggesting that for the third date he help with a drywall project in my house. I’m getting a sick feeling in my stomach just thinking about him. I don’t want to hurt his feelings. What should I do?

Within reach I've gone past that huge turtle in Cass Park since 2005, but I didn't know until yesterday she had a name.

Gaia. GUY-ya.

You haven't seen the turtle? You haven't been paying attention! At 40-50' long (and 11 years old), she's hard to miss.

Gaya was the first major piece of the Ithaca Children's Garden which has developed into a 3 acre park of play, education and exploration, directed by Erin Marteal whose enthusiasm for the park is contagious.

by Sarah Post

pandabear Hi there, my name is Panda Bear! I might be a little shy at first, but I'm sure to warm up to you with a little coaxing. I love watching the birds, cuddling next to you on the couch, and playing with wand toys. I was brought in to the shelter because I wasn't very happy living with other cats, so I would like to be your only feline, but I can be tolerant of dogs. I would prefer to live with adults or older children, as children tend to spook me. Do you think I might be the right girl for you? I have been spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped, so I'm ready to go home. Ask an adoption counselor about how to adopt today!

posticon Rummage is a Community Event

LUMC Rummage SaleLansing people look forward to events.  The Lion's Club 4th of July picnic, the Community Council's fireworks.  The weekly chicken massacre... er... barbecue.  Twice a year it's Rummage Sale time.  Lansing United Methodist Church (LUMC) has been running the sale for decades, and it has become the church's biggest fundraiser, grossing around $8,000 to $10,000, give or take, each time.

"It reaches a lot of people, and it provides a very nice service for a lot of people -- including the people who participate in it" says Ed LaVigne co-chaired the sale last month.  "It is a redistribution of wonderfulness, of generosity, of kindness.  I think we sometimes forget that in our dog eat dog world.  We really need to reach out and be more kind to each other."

posticon Within Reach - Six Mile Creek Winery

Within reachIf you are from the Finger Lakes region of Central New York – or just visiting, you may have the impression that all the wineries are somehow attached to or near the lakes. For the most part, they are, but one in particular, hides nestled in a valley a few miles to the southeast of Ithaca.

About 3.5 miles up Rt 79 East from downtown Ithaca, Six Mile Creek Vineyard sparkles on the slope leading down to (appropriately) Six Mile Creek.

The cooler climate away from the lakes is perfect for the growing of the Vignoles grapes and many other white varieties. Seriously, try the 2014 Vignoles. Just a bit tart with a finish of citrus makes it a perfect warm weather wine – I love it with cheese curds and some good company. But I digress.

posticon Myers Park Service Marks Memorial Day

service 120In a town with such a rich history as Lansing, Memorial Day is both a day of remembrance and a time to unofficially begin the summer season.  Both of these ideas converged recently at the entrance to Myers Park where about a dozen gathered together in a ceremony to honor the fallen soldiers of the community.

As no other memorial services have been held in recent years to mark the occasion, Fr James Worthington of Holy Apostles Orthodox Church contacted the area faith communities a few weeks ago to begin to organize the event.  At the appointed time, Pastor Jane Sautter, with several of her parishioners joined with the Holy Apostles community along with residents of the nearby marina.  A requiem service was sung at the sight of the commemorative marker in Myers Park.

Kids Discover The TrailLansing 1st graders were greeted by a Coelophysis, stuck their hands in a glacier, and made their own fossils last month.  Sounds dangerous, but in reality it was a field trip to the Museum of the Earth, part of the Discovery Trail program, Kids Discover the Trail (KDT).  The point is to give children hands-on experience to get them interested in earth science.

"The idea is to get students outside the classroom, to have hands-on learning and make concepts tangible, to develop critical thinking skills, and just to have fun," says Discovery Trail Executive Director Star Bressler.  "We're going into our 12th year of programs.  It's an opportunity to bring elementary school youth into museums and to have hands-on learning experiences so they become interested in science, art, and nature."
