ihsWith support from an Ithaca Public Education Initiative (IPEI) Teacher Grant, DeWitt Middle School Orchestra Director Aaron Buck is collaborating with Cornell University’s Musicology Professor Neal Zaslaw to teach students about the Baroque period through performance and art.  Teacher Grants are awarded to Ithaca City School District (ICSD) teachers who create innovative projects that bring community members into active participation in the classroom.

“It’s not often in middle school that you get to work on something of this caliber,” Buck said.  “This grant allows us not only to do the aesthetic parts of the performance, but it also allows us to bring in professional musicians.”

posticon Food and Wine - A Panacea? Perhaps

Print Print

foodandwine120Many studies show that there's something we can ingest that's amazingly beneficial to our health. It's close at hand, easy to find, and most of can afford it. It contains powerful antioxidants that protect our cells from damage caused by those dastardly unstable molecules which we call free radicals. This wonderful substance can also reduce our susceptibility to heart disease. It can lower our incidences of stroke. It probably protects us from cancer. It can ward off neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, and it can even improve dental health and prevent gum disease.

Do you know what I'm referring to? If not, would you like to? Then read on...

dog1Lansing dog owners have been wishing for a place where their pets can run free in a safe, fenced area.  Last week the idea picked up considerable traction when Lansing resident Sybel Bush asked the Town Board to make the idea a reality.  This week Bush is forming a committee and beginning the work it will take to complete a dog park some time this summer.

"I am passionate about this," she says.  "I want to see it through because it will be a wonderful asset for the community.  It makes me wonder why I didn't think of this 20 years ago!"

posticon All About Leap Day

Print Print
Pin It
leapdayIt takes our planet 365.242199 days to circle the sun.  That .242199 of a day adds up to almost a whole day that has to go somewhere.  Over 2000 years ago Julius Caesar decided to do something about it.  He added a leap day every four years.

But that didn't account for the 0.007801 of a day that didn't accrue in a year.  1500 years later the Gregorian Calendar corrected the mistake.  It aligned the calendar with the equinox, dropping a number of days when the change was made.

esfota_11_120For the third year the East Shore Festival Of The Arts (ESFOTA) is gearing up to take over the Lansing Town Hall and Lansing Community Library.  The grand opening has become a must-go event in Lansing, and the art, music, and activities for this year's gala event are already being lined up.  Organizer Robin Schuttenberg says this year the judging will be stricter, and the May 11 opening promises to be a great time.

"It's going to be a big opening," she says.  "I'm hoping to show about 30 or 35 artists this year, probably closer to 30.  That seemed to be just right.  We're going to be a little more selective about what we bring into the show this year.  We may have fewer pieces to hang, but we want to make sure we have good quality work on the walls."
