commons_aerial120Tobacco companies call them “replacement smokers.” You call them your children.  Either way, area kids are being targeted by cigarette makers with a massive amount of advertising in local stores according to a survey released today by Tobacco Free Tompkins (T-Free) and the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Stores were randomly selected from a list of retailers licensed to sell tobacco in Tompkins County and 20 were visited during October.

posticon Ithaca Dedicates $12M Performing Arts Center

ihspac_120Most high schools are lucky to have an auditorium that serves multiple purposes with limited off stage facilities double for multiple functions.  Ithaca school officials celebrated quite a different kind of facility Sunday when they hosted an open house to dedicate the new Ithaca High School Performing Arts Center.  The 40,000 square foot facility is certainly something to celebrate.  It adds a black box theater, rehearsal spaces, classrooms, and a scene shop and costume shop to create a facility that most colleges would be proud to have.

"We're really excited because this performance center is now almost double what it was before," says Ithaca City School Superintendent Judith Pastel.  "It's not just for children in the year 2010, but will be for generations.  20 years from now, 30 or 40 years from now many children will go through this facility and have an outstanding opportunity around the performing arts."

r2meLaninsg_120Most are familiar with the banners adorning Tompkins County buildings compelling us to “Read to me, anytime, anyplace.” They are the tip of the iceberg of family literacy-based programming the Family Reading Partnership infused into the community over the last decade or so.

The Family Reading Partnership’s mission is ‘to create a culture of literacy'. It grows with the support of a generous membership and donors who believe in that mission.

The annual Lansing Boy Scout Troop 48's Haunted House scared local kids on the night before Halloween last weekend.

"They love to do it," says Assistant Scout Master Rick Vaughan.  "The older scouts like to participate because they remember all the fun they had when they were younger, so you know it's a good activity."
