Great American Bake Sale at Lansing Farmer's MarketLansing Farmer's Market was sweeter, by far, than usual two weeks ago.  That's because children were selling about 20 different baked items that they had made themselves, including 6 inch chocolate chip, chocolate chip walnut and oatmeal raison cookies, sticky bun coffee cakes, cheese cake cookies with cherries, and yeast bread, among others.  The goodies came from this summer's cooking camp, but the proceeds went to fight childhood hunger that effects over 12 million children in the United States.

"Every year I try to raise money for The Great American Bake Sale," says Marion Cardwell-Ferrer.  "Last year I used part of the proceeds from my wedding cakes.  This year I thought it would be fun to get the kids involved.  We had camp Monday through Friday.  We prepped all the items for Saturday and sold them at the Lansing Farmers Market."

posticon Old Playground Equipment Gets a New Look

ImageOut with the old, in with the new.  That's what it seemed would happen when the Myers Park Playground Project (MP3) came along.  Over the years the old playground equipment had worn away, or new safety standards declared them unsafe.  But Park Superintendent Steve Colt started getting calls from people who had fond memories of the old equipment.

"I can personally remember playing on it when I was a kid," Colt says.  "The four way spring toy and some of the older spring toys have to be over 40 years old."

Local artist Robin Schuttenberg was also interested in the fate of the spring toys.  She made Colt an offer: if the Parks and Recreation Department would pay for the materials, she would paint the animal pieces.  On Wednesday Colt was raving about the results, citing the depth of detail and the whimsical make-over she has achieved.

posticon Log Cabin Readied for Harbor Festival

ImageIf you think building a house is hard, try rebuilding one with no money, tools, or materials!  That was the challenge the Town of Lansing faced when former Councilman Bud Shattuck started his campaign to save Lansing's (an Tompkins and Cayuga Counties) oldest log cabin.  The first phase was rescuing it from the Cayuga Museum in Auburn, which had no further use for it.  That was Shattuck's piece.  Next Ed LaVigne and the Lansing Community Council raised the money to get the cabin reassembled in Myers Park.  The last piece is the chinking (the mudding that insulates between the logs), the doors, and the windows.  Enter Carl Coté and Results Renovation and Repair, who are donating their time and skills to the project.  Last weekend the chinking on the cabin exterior was completed.

"Our objective is to get the outside of the cabin all chinked before the Lansing Harbor Festival on August 14th," Coté says.  "We'll have a door that allows the inside to be accessible.  By this Fall we'll definitely have both doors and the windows completed.  The inside chinking may occur late this Fall.  We'd be able to keep some heat in there if need be, so we can do it in cooler temperatures."

posticon Lansing Star 5th Anniversary Issue

ImageIt's hard to believe but this issue marks the Lansing Star Online's fifth anniversary.  Karen and I  published our first issue on July 22, 2005.  The top story was about the Town Board considering a domestic partner policy for employees who are part of same-sex couples.

Also in that issue were articles about the Triphammer Road reconstruction project being held up, the Town approving the Searles/Conlon Road cell tower, part one of a three part interview with the Lansing High School Athletic Director, girls softball, a school board report, and an article on a $70 million capital project (that eventually died), the library's summer reading program, a review of a new Harry Potter book, and a series of articles on the Rogue's Harbor Inn.

In honor of our anniversary I interviewed myself.  In the interview I reflect on the past and talk about what it has been like to produce a local newspaper every week.

ImageIf you wanted to give a child the best possible message, what would it be?  Try to excel.  Be passionate about life.  Do the right thing.  Follow your dreams.  Love to read.  That was the message author Tim Green brought to Lansing kids last Saturday when he was the featured speaker for the Lansing Community Library's Summer Reading Program.

"Sports Illustrated and Los Angeles Times called Tim green the renaissance man of sports," Librarian Susie Gutenberger-Fitzpatrick said.  "He does all sorts of things.  He's a sports player and a lawyer and an author.  He's done a lot in his life."

ImageIthaca resident Matt Sacco is set to fill the director position for The Cayuga Nature Center’s well known, exhilarating TEAM Challenge.

Aimed at building unity, improving problem-solving tactics, and enhancing communications, TEAM Challenge helps co-workers find leadership within themselves while learning innovative tactics to arrive at group problem solving solutions. These helpful skills, essential in any field, are not gained in the conventional meeting room of an office building but rather on an intricate ropes course in the beautiful natural forest at the Cayuga Nature Center.
