posticon A Lansing Harbor Festival Preview

ImageOn August 14th Myers Park will fill up with people looking for good music, good food, events, and a good time.  But Lansing Harbor Festival is organized entirely by Lansing Community Council  volunteers who are busiest from January through August putting together the festival.  Each year there is a major new element, as well as tweaks to existing pieces, and this year is no exception.  This year's big new piece is a Fishing Derby competition.   The music, vendors, food, contests, and great day at the park will be better than ever in the festival's fourth year.

The bands are always the big draw for the festival, and this year has a stellar lineup.  Starting the day will be the Lansing High School Cabaret directed by Bob Keefe.  John Rawlins was last year's Z95.5's singing contest winner, and he'll be at Harbor Festival this year to perform.  The Rochester-based dance rock band Reporter, which features Lansing's School Superintendent Steve Grimm on bass, is on the bill, as is a repeat performance by the Po' Boys Brass Band, a New Orleans-style brass/funk/rock band.  Finishing the festival with the countrified pop-rock stylings of the Burns Sisters has become a tradition that will be maintained this year as well.

posticon Museum of the Earth Responds to Oil Spill

Print Print

ImageIt has been just over two months since the first day of the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that occurred on April 20, 2010. In addition to the surface slick and tar balls washing ashore, a deep-water oil plume, being carried by a clockwise Loop Current, now threatens the third largest coral reef and marine ecosystem in the world and endangers thousands of invertebrate species indigenous to the Gulf and Florida Keys.

Although dozens of oily pelicans have become the iconic symbol for the recent disaster to hit the Gulf, thousands of forgotten creatures such as the spiny flower coral, yellow mussel, red heart urchin and the purple sea snail are equally under siege by the immeasurable plume of dense oil and dispersants. The Museum of the Earth recognizes the severity of the spill beyond the sandy beaches and below the murky surface.

ImageIt didn't matter whether it was raining or hot or sunny.  The excitement and positive attitude was palpable as volunteers came together to build the Myers Park Playground .  When it became clear that the ambitious project wasn't going to be completed in five days as originally hoped, scores of volunteers stepped up over three more days last week to finish it.

"We had a pretty good turnout, probably about 50 people, which was fantastic," said project designer Marc Leathers late Saturday.  "And the weather cooperated.  There were a lot of little pieces and finishing the ground cover.  We're basically there.  It's been a good project.  I've seen a lot of happy faces. The bottom line is that a really dedicated core group has been here the entire time.  That has made all the difference in the world."

ImageSix employees were honored Tuesday for a collective 116 years of service to the  Lansing School District.  Each was presented a golden apple and an aerial photograph of the Lansing campus to mark their retirement from the district.  Margaret Christopher, Georgia Eastman, Cynthia 'Sam' Foley, Lisa Livigne, Judy McDermott, and Karen Tucker were joined by colleagues and family for cake and a warm send off at the Lansing Middle School.

"It's a very special time for them as they look toward their future," Superintendent Stephen Grimm said.  "It is a sad time for us as we think about the big loss that we will have among the teaching ranks, our food service and the transportation department."
