posticon Scott Honored For Library Advocacy

ImageLast May voters overwhelmingly said they did not want the Lansing Community Library to be abolished.  The vote was nearly three to one in favor of keeping the library.  On October 31 the Finger Lakes Library System (FLLS) honored Friends of the Library President Donna Scott for her advocacy in the time of the library's greatest need.  Scott received the award at FLLC's 51st annual meeting in Virgil.

"I'm sitting there thinking, 'Oh this is nice.'  Then all of a sudden they start reading our story about the library vote in Lansing last Spring, and I realized who they were talking about," she recalls.  "They give it to one person.  Since I was the chief nag and leader of the whole group that got out the vote for the library, I won the award.  I was really amazed and surprised."

posticon Out and About in the Finger Lakes

Out and About in the Finger LakesOut and About in the Finger LakesLast week was the start of preparations for the holidays but we had a few practical things to take care of before our daughter, Mouse, and her husband, Harry, arrive from Hawaii next week. We are working out at the YMCA when Jim is in Albany but he was in sore need of new sneakers last week. Being diabetic he has to be extremely careful of his feet and the “wear them around to break them in “school of shoe fitting doesn’t work for his extra wide feet.

We were off to Sarvay Shoe Co on Main St. in Cortland Saturday for new style, light weight sneakers. The owner, who has fitted Jim several times before, was there Saturday morning, his elegant moustache and ready shoe horn greeted us as we came in to the flow of steady customers that morning. Most of the people seemed to be repeat customers and, like Jim, folks who had the need for good quality shoes and custom fit, at a reasonable price.

ImageRepresentatives of 16 local food pantries and other local relief organizations gathered at the Tompkins County Cooperative Extension Wednesday to thank Cargill Deicing Technology for a $100,000 donation the company gave to the Tompkins County Food Distribution Network.  The donation was a significant windfall, especially for local pantries that are seeing a greater need due to the economic downturn, but operate on a shoestring.

"It was a great opportunity to touch every little piece of Tompkins County," said Tompkins County Red Cross Director of Homeless Services John Ward.  "The Pantry Network represents the most rural areas of the county and we want to make sure that those folks are getting fed, and that they have some of the resources that the other pantries may have.  So this was a really good way to spread the wealth and touch some of those rural areas of our county that are really struggling."

Michael Coles
This past weekend after months of preparation, Michael Coles, of Lansing Troop 48 – Boy Scouts of America, completed his Eagle Scout project.  With help from fellow scouts, a boat rack was built near the waterfront at Myers Park.  Builders Best Do-It Center, Baker-Miller Lumber Company and Rick’s Rental World helped support the project.

The rack can hold 7 sailboats and 6+ canoes and kayaks.  The project is a portion of the requirements for Eagle rank and includes meetings with stakeholders, planning, requests for donations and project construction.  The boat rack will support the Lansing Recreation Department’s sailing program and the public with small watercraft storage.

posticon Students Aim to Reduce High School Carbon Footprint

ImageAfter attending a youth empowerment workshop at Ithaca College, Lansing High School students Ally Robinson, Alex Conte, and Chelsea Tucker decided to do something about making their own school greener.  They decided to form the 'Green Team,' which would take an active role in reducing their school's carbon footprint, and thereby save the district money in waste disposal costs.  Last Monday the trio was at the Lansing Board Of Education meeting to report on their initiative.

"Some of our goals are to calculate our school's carbon footprint and make it a goal of the entire student body to reduce it to a set number in a certain amount of time," Robinson said.  "We also want to raise awareness about all the simple ways they can reduce their carbon footprint among the faculty, staff, and students."

Glenn Puit
Nevada Controller Kathy Augustine was found unconscious on July 8th, 2006 by her husband Chas Higgs.  She died three days later. The next Friday Higgs, a nurse at the Carson-Tahoe Regional Medical Center, attempted suicide, spurring suspicion that he may have had something to do with his wife's death.  On June 29, 2007 a jury found that he had murdered her with succinylcholine.  Journalist Glenn Puit covered the case, and last Tuesday his book, 'In Her Prime: The Murder of a Political Star' was released.

"Kathy Augustine was someone that most people would like to identify with, Puit says.  "She was a single mom at one point in her life, wondering how to make ends meet.  She decided to completely retool her life, and got a Masters Degree in Public Administration.  She was a tough fighter.  She knew how to win and was really a scrapper.  I really admire her for that."
