ImageMy child struggles in school and I wonder if she needs special education. I don’t understand the special education process.  Where do I start?

First, it is important to learn about the laws that make up the world of special education.  The Individuals with Disabilities Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA 2004) is the federal law that governs the provision of special education services.  This law has been in existence since 1975, better known as Public Law 94-142: Education of All Handicapped Children Act.  To receive federal funds, each state must develop and implement policies that assure a free appropriate education (FAPE) to all children with disabilities.

ImageWhen the Lansing Community Council was re-formed in 2006 it was funnelling about $10,000 to The Lansing Recreation Program, Drop-in Center, Lansing Youth Services, and Lansing Older Adults program, with a bit left over for residents in emergency need.  Since then the council has reached for the sky, establishing the Lansing Harbor Festival , and raising additional money for the schools and other local programs.  Now Community Council President Ed LaVigne says the group is looking for new projects to fund.

"As we evolve we are finding out what our next mission is," he says.  "We've stabilized the grant funding, we've moved on to the Harbor Festival, which seems to be stabilized.  And now we're looking for a new project for the next year."

On March 31 mysteriously masked perpetrators left a large camel outside Lansing United Methodist Church Pastor Bill Gottschalk-Fielding's house next to the church.  The camel had been spirited away after it appeared in Lansing High School Production of 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat' a few weeks ago.  Gottschalk-Fielding often uses a camel puppet named Leopold in sermons to children.  The masked mystery perps left a smaller camel in the Pastor's office with a note saying that 'Leopold said it was OK to drop by any time."  Gottschalk-Fielding has no idea who deposited the beast.

Susan Campbell Bartoletti
When kids are in hopeless situations they may just go along and do what they are told even if what they are told is the wrong thing to do.  But some kids rise to the challenge and do the right thing.  That's what interests award winning author Susan Campbell Bartoletti , who spent three days in the Lansing schools this week.

"It comes out of my teaching and working with 13 and 14 year olds," she says.  "Yes, they can be brainwashed, and yes they can be indoctrinated.  But I want to give them hope.  I want to tell them that yes, you can also be courageous and brave.  You can make a decision that will make a difference."

posticon Book Lady Brings Authors to Lansing

ImageAfter retiring most people want to spend what money they have to pursue other interests, or maybe travel a little.  But after a successful career as a youth librarian Susan Rosenkoetter wanted to continue sharing her love of books with children.  For most people that might mean volunteering at their local school or library.  While Rosenkoetter does those things she has also funded trips for Lansing teachers to national reading conferences, donated books, and for the past four years she has paid to bring renowned authors to speak and work with Lansing school students.

This week she hosted award-winning author Susan Campbell Bartoletti, a Newbury Honor writer who has published 14 works of fiction and non-fiction.  Bartoletti says Rosenkoetter was a major factor in her decision to speak here.  "What made me choose Lansing was, first of all, Susan Rosenkoetter's passion about books," she says.

ImageNext Wednesday (March 25th) Rogue's Harbor Inn is opening its ballroom to help build a house in Lansing.  The Inn is mixing fun and giving in a ballroom benefit for the Habitat for Humanity home that is scheduled to begin construction in North Lansing this summer.

"The fund raiser at Rouge's Harbor is really a dual purpose event," says Construction Coordinator Ed Siemon.  "The first is to raise awareness of Habitat for Humanity's presence in Tompkins County.  The second is to raise funds.  The money will be used for the construction of the Breed Road house and toward future building in Tompkins County."
