posticon Admissions Test Mania

ImageDecisions, decisions...What college admissions tests should you take? Most colleges today accept either the ACT with writing or the SAT I in fulfillment of their testing requirement. An important point to note is that only the ACT with writing is equivalent to the SATI. I generally recommend that students try both tests once to see which one better fits their learning style. The SATI is more theoretical and vocabulary rich. The ACT is content based and more similar to high school exams. The ACT has a "science" section in addition to the verbal and math sections that involves data and graph interpretation.

Sandi (not her real name) is similar to a number of students I have worked with who have done well in their high school classes but do poorly on standardized tests like the SAT. Sandi was disappointed in her SAT and her ACT scores based on the test statistics of admitted students for colleges she was interested in. However, she found the ACT less "tricky" and found the reading passages easier to understand. She also liked the fact that no points were taken off for wrong answers. Sandi studied a book containing several practice ACTS in preparation for a second ACT test over a period of 6 weeks and was able to improve her score by 25%.

ImageConcerned neighbors came to Monday's Planning Board meeting Monday for two public hearings concerning developments near their homes.  The Lansing Commons project proposes to build a combination of single family homes, townhouses, and apartments south of the corner of Woodsedge Drive and Cayuga Vista Drive.  The more ambitious Cayuga Farms Town Homes seeks to build 138 townhouses on the west side of Triphammer Road between Michaeleen's Florist and Asbury Road.  (Click maps below for larger view.)

Lansing Commons will be built in three phases.  The first will largely involve single family homes, the second will add townhouses, and the third will add apartments and possibly commercial buildings to the mix.  It will have its own package plant to handle sewage.

posticon Flipping the Bird in Lansing

ImageWhen Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on February 2, evidently eight flamingos didn't get the message.  Saturday they perched on roof of the Lansing home of Jamie and Melissa Ferris, and they have been there all week, evidently feasting on a twelve-pack of beer.  "I had nothing to do with it, of course," says local attorney Guy Krogh.  "The birds actually flocked and migrated to that rooftop."

The truth is that the birds are the result of a long planned, nefarious act of revenge for a seemingly innocent prank Melissa pulled off over a year ago when she attached a pink Disney princess antenna decoration on Krogh's truck.  He didn't notice it for a week while he drove to hunting and fishing trips and to poker games.  Finally a buddy asked him what the little pink princess was doing on his truck.  He quickly figured out who had perpetrated the perplexingly pink pickup princess.

ImageThis year a lucky student will qualify for a unique new scholarship that melds community involvement with academic achievement.  The Finger Lakes Scholarship of Civic Engagement was conceived by college admissions consultant Lucia Tyler, a Trumansburg businesswoman who got a small consortium of small businesses to contribute.

"It's a group of small business owners who believe strongly in the value of education, in supporting students in the costs of education, and also believing in the value of students participating in community," Tyler says.  "That could be internships for a newspaper, or getting involved in fire fighting, or getting involved in a community library, or doing something with local government."

ImageIn these days of fast-changing technology, not everyone has gotten onto the computer bandwagon.  But increasingly people are looking to computers to stay in touch with each other and more and more it is becoming more a part of the mainstream of modern living.  The Lansing Community Library is offering three classes this weekend to help people who may be feeling left behind.

Saturday's class will teach basic email, and the other two will cover email and computer maintenance.  "The classes are for people who have used them a little bit with a lot of assistance from someone," says part time staff member Paula Weaver.  "Or it could be someone who hasn't used them at all.  We will go through using the mouse -- the the left click, right click, how to drag and drop files...  we're going to try to keep it basic."

ImageThis tax season will probably be more difficult than most for local families as they face economic uncertainty and rising costs. Now more than ever, it is critical that working families know exactly what tax benefits they are eligible for so they can keep more of their hard-earned money.  This is why I am reaching out to my constituents in every corner of our district to make sure they know about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), as well as where to go for free help preparing their tax return. I urge everyone to check to see if you are eligible for this tax credit and take advantage of free tax help.

The EITC is the federal government’s largest program benefiting lower earning workers. It is available to workers with earned income of or below $38,646 ($41,646 if married filing jointly) for families with two or more children; $33,995 ($36,995 if married filing jointly) for families with one child or $12,880 ($15,880 if married filing jointly) for individuals with no children. Everyone within these income brackets should check to see if they qualify. Some individuals and families may qualify for the credit for the first time this year because of unemployment or other changes in financial, marital or parental status.
