6th Grade Green Team

Lansing Middle Schools's 6th Grade Green Team lobbied the Board Of Education Monday to reduce single-use plastic use in their cafeteria.  4 Rs Focus Group members Matthew and Valerie, and Science Club members Dean and Toby (with Mike manning the computer to change PowerPoint slides) told the board about how non-recyclable plastic cups and eating utensils are used in their school. The students offered over $1,000 they earned by recycling cans and bottles at the middle school to buy reusable bowls, and metal silverware with the money if the Board of Education would accept their proposal.

"We want to make Lansing more green by reducing the use of single-use plastic that our school produces," Matthew said. "We have been working all year to reduce the amount of single-use plastic that is used in the cafeteria.  For example, we have accomplished the goal of eliminating the use of single-use straws."

Do you like pitty gals with a great grin? I’m Lady, and I’m always up for a hike or a nice long game of fetch. When you’re as cute as I am, you can always get your way with a little complaining! Plus, when I’m having fun, my million-watt grin will light up the whole room! I’m not big on sharing my spotlight, so I’d prefer a household without other dogs and with teens or just adults. Come visit me!

Summer camp season is around the corner and the Tompkins County Health Department reminds families to protect campers from illness. Summer camps offer fun and excitement for our youth and can involve travel to other parts of the State and beyond.

Contagious diseases, such as measles, can spread easily at camp. When a person sick with measles coughs or sneezes, the virus gets into the air where it can stay for two hours. Anyone who is not immune, can get measles if they are in that area. The New York State Department of Health reports that there are over 300 confirmed cases of measles in our State outside of NYC.

Seneca Lake Guardian has selected its first annual scholarship recipient to honor renowned environmental attorney, Deborah Goldberg, upon the announcement of her retirement.  Anneke Walsh van Rossum, an Ithaca College graduate, was chosen by Seneca Lake Guardian Board members after careful consideration of all applicants for the scholarship.

"Right now we have the right to free speech but not to clean water or air – it's mind boggling but true," said van Rossum. "I have spent my life thinking about, and caring for our natural world. As an adult, I have chosen to pursue a career in environmental law so I can grow and strengthen the skills I need to advocate for our planet. While there are millions of ways to advocate for our Earth, for me the law is the best way to claim and defend the rights of people and nature for both present and future generations," she added.

Congregation Tikun v'Or

The Ithaca Reform Temple, Congregation Tikkun v'Or, has analyzed energy improvements to its synagogue on Triphammer Road. More than two full years of operation with the upgrades in place have been analyzed and are slightly different than some numbers that were prematurely circulating in the community.

In short: compared to years preceding the upgrades, carbon emissions have been slashed by 85%, natural gas use has been cut by 80%, electricity use has increased (by about 60%) as expected due to our conversion to air source heat pumps, and overall energy costs have been reduced by about a third (almost $2000/year savings).  In addition, the new heating system can be conveniently controlled and diagnosed remotely, and congregation members say they do it all the time.  For example, for special events, they adjust the temperatures remotely before and after the event.
