posticon Solid Waste Recycling Prom Dresses

Print Print

ImageEvery year girls shop for a prom dress that they will probably wear only once.  These dresses end up in closets, the Salvation Army, or even in the trash.  The next year they do it all again.  This year the Tompkins County Solid Waste Division has decided to do something about it so the dresses can be reused.  On March 24th middle and high school girls will have a chance to exchange their gowns at the Pyramid Mall.  "It would be nice if people had a chance to find a dress so they don't have to spend that money again every year," says Communication & Administrative Coordinator Linnett Short.

Short has been contacting local schools, and many have agreed to be part of the event.  Others have at least agreed to publicize it to their students.  Girls will bring their old prom or formal gown to school and receive a ticket for it.  On March 24 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm they will be able to exchange their ticket for another dress.  From 2:00pm to 4:00 pm anyone can come to choose a dress.

As students filed into Lansing's elementary school Monday they couldn't help but notice a wall of decorative tiles that wasn't there when they left for vacation a week before.  Exclamations of 'Look at this!' and 'These are awesome!' and 'I like this one!'   The tiles were painted by fourth graders in 2002 and 2003, but weren't put on display until last week when high school senior Thomas Z

posticon Healing Well: Acceptable Behavior

Healing WellHealing WellThere are ways to deal with unacceptable behavior in the workplace without resorting to threats, dismissal, or lawsuits. Taking effective and decisive action can often mean the difference between an enjoyable, productive workplace and one fraught with disharmony.

First, your office should have policies and procedures that deal with acceptable behavior. Each employee ought to be familiar with these office “rules and regulations” governing appropriate dress, language, physical contact and personal hygiene. At the least, everyone in the office should be courteous, polite, and possess an esprit de corps.

After being closed for months of renovations the Lansing Community Library Center held a mad hatter's tea party for the grand reopening Wednesday evening.  Crazy and unusual hats adorned visitors and library volunteers, and an exhibit of historical Lansing photographs with actual hats similar to those in the pictures graced the new exhibition room, where tea and cookies were served as Ben Hummel played the violin.  "Everybody's supposed to wear a hat," said Art Chairperson Janice Hagstrom.  "You can't be part of the tea party without a hat!"

posticon Lansing Library Prepares for Grand Opening

When construction started on the Lansing Community Library Center (LCLC) last year the optimistic estimate was that the $385,000 renovation project would be completed in the Fall.  As with all construction projects, it doesn't do to be overly optimistic about the schedule.  But when the library officially reopens on February 28th it will have been well worth waiting for.  The original thought was to have a 'soft opening' before the grand opening, but the library board has decided to wait and use the time to put everything in order. "This library is such a wonderful gift to the community," says publicity chairwoman Bobbi Wasenko.  "We want the gift to look beautiful before we present it."
