 Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

I’m a college student at a large university in Boston. My major is engineering, and I spend a lot of time studying especially mathematics and science. I work very hard and get solid B’s for my effort. A few months into the spring semester, some friends began circulating older math and engineering exams. These older exams were a big help at times, especially when some of the questions would appear on exams during the semester. My grades have improved to B+ and even reach the A mark, but I’m worried. Is this a form of cheating? Should I not look at these older exams?

Sincerely,

Rick

posticon All Saints Breaks Ground

ImageThe intermittent mid-morning rain showers on June 4th had absolutely no effect of dampening the enthusiasm to break ground for Lansing’s newest house of worship adjacent to the Fellowship Hall of All Saints Roman Catholic Church, 347 Ridge Road.

A sanctuary overflowing with parishioners spilled out onto the parking lot after the 10 o’clock service, to be joined by even more members, neighbors, invited guests, community members and representatives of the press who wanted to join in the joyful ceremony of breaking ground for their new church. The “old” building, erected in the 1930’s, will remain standing and continue to serve the congregation in various ways.

posticon Salt Point Tour Shows Plan

A small group of interested souls braved the rain Saturday to take a walking tour of Salt Point and learn about changes that will be made when the Town begins transforming the facility.  Salt Point is an area on the north side of Salmon Creek, across the creek from from Myers Park.  The DEC has granted the Town of Lansing a 25 year lease to manage the property.  "At this point I think they're pretty happy with what's going on," says Town Supervisor Steve Farkas.  "This has been a sore thumb for them for a while, and it's going to take a big load off of their back that we're willing to take this on."

posticon Your Opinion Wanted on School Project

Lansing's Community Awareness Group wants to know what you think.  One of two committees formed to build a new school district capital project, its purpose is to get information to and from the community at large, and to transmit it to and from the Facilities Group that is putting together the specific proposal.  The idea is that if the community builds the project it is more likely to vote for it.

In keeping with that mission the group recently released a survey.    "It's the capital project survey," says Maureen Bell, a member of the Community Awareness Group.  "It presents the issues in the facilities.  There are several problems, both with the structures and with the programs for the kids.  We're asking people for their solutions to those problems, that are not necessarily monetary solutions."

posticon Track Your Financial Journey

Use "Odometer" - Not "Ruler" - To Track Financial Journey

When you're on a long driving trip, how do you check your progress? Do you stop every few feet, pull out a ruler and measure your progress from Point A to Point B? Of course not. You drive for miles and miles and then, every so often, you look at your odometer. And this same method of evaluating how far you have come is valid for another type of trip - your financial journey through life.

Unfortunately, too many people, when evaluating how well their investments are doing, choose the "ruler" over the "odometer." And the "ruler" they choose is their monthly investment statement. Too often, they get nervous, upset - and even panicky - if this month's statement shows a drop in value from last month's statement. And if they don't like this "measurement," they may well take hasty, ill-advised actions, such as purchasing investments they shouldn't buy and selling investments they shouldn't sell.

Dear IMO,

How can we get our neighbors to act like neighbors? Our neighbors will wave at us when they leave or arrive, but there is no real feeling of a neighborhood. Can you think of any ways to get our neighbors to act neighborly?

Sincerely,
Keith and Rita
