sugah catBy Chloe Winter

Hey there, I'm Sugah! I came in as a very hungry stray. I have probably lived outside all 10 years of my life. Despite that, I am still pretty trusting and friendly. If you love tall, long cats, you should come and meet me! I am the perfect kind of cat for someone who likes quiet companionship. Check me out and you'll agree!

posticon Dear Margaret - Feeling Left Out

Print Print

dearmargaretDear Margaret: My husband died last year, and I'm starting to get back on my feet. I've found new activities that are enjoyable and keep mentally alert and physically challenged. My problem is that friends I've met at various groups when talking about meeting outside of that particular activity generally exclude me in favor of people who are part of a couple. It hurts a little and always reminds me that I'm no longer a couple. I know this is yet another hurdle, but I don't know how to react to feeling left out. It makes me feel lost. Do you have suggestions for handling these situations?

posticon Ithaca Family Becomes Year-round Communitywide Philanthropists

mcPheron

For Phil and Mary Lu McPheron, philanthropy is a family affair.

When more than 30 requests for funding were made to Community Foundation of Tompkins County in November, the McPherons consulted with their daughters — both of whom live in the Washington, D.C. area — to determine if and where they should donate their money.  After assessing the requests, they all ended up choosing a nonprofit they had never heard of — the Free Science Workshop, which was launching a science night for families in Ithaca that would include a nutritious meal and an interactive science project.

"The kids and parents could attend a workshop and build something, which would promote interaction in the family," says Phil, a retired administrator at Cornell University and a board member at Community Foundation. "And it was particularly devoted to kids who might not have the resources to do that."

The Fine Arts Booster Group (FABG), an affiliate of IPEI, has awarded $4,620 in grants to 12 Ithaca City School District (ICSD) programs that will reach 1,180 students.  Grant funds are made possible through Fine Arts Booster Group donations and performance programs ad sales sponsorships. The boosters produce performance booklet programs for middle and high school concerts and plays, totaling over thirty five events each year.

All secondary schools received Drama Program grants, including DeWitt Middle, Boynton Middle, Lehman Alternative Community, and Ithaca High. Secondary school arts trips will be supported by scholarship assistance. The Saltonstall Arts Colony received support for the annual teacher residency.    A special grant was awarded to support students performing an ICSD student’s work at the New York State Schools Music Association conference. The Combined Jazz Bands will have a visiting guest artist. The Ithaca High Visual Arts students will create portraits for orphan refugees. In addition, FABG mini-grants support dance, visual artists, touring theater, and music at Ithaca High, Beverly J. Martin Elementary and Fall Creek Elementary Schools.

Hello, I'm Nakia. I'm only 4 years old and I have a beautiful tortoiseshell and tabby multi-color pattern. I arrived at the SPCA when I was found as a friendly stray, but no one came in to claim me. Won't you give me a warm home this holiday season?

posticon Teddy Bears Ready for Their Next Life

TBT 2018 2 5313

Syracuse - 4,283 teddy bears. Amazing! Thanks to the generosity of Stanley Steemer, the Syracuse Crunch Hockey Club and thousands of delighted fans, this mountain of teddy bears are poised to be adopted in Central New York's greatest event of generosity, the Salvation Army's Christmas Bureau, scheduled for this Wednesday, December 19, 2016 at the OnCenter in downtown Syracuse.

The plush toys were collected from the ice at last Saturday's Syracuse Crunch hockey game against the Rochester Americans and have been cleaned, repaired and refurbished at Stanley Steemer of Syracuse. Steemer's expert technicians use their well learned skills to clean every toy, disinfect and dry them, so that they are in as close to "like new" condition as possible.

dearmargaretDear Margaret: My sister and I have always had a difficult relationship. There have been so many times when she's pushed my buttons, and I've vowed to never speak to her again. I always let things slide after I have a few days to calm down. I'm not even sure she knows how offensive she is. Each time we're together she makes cutting remarks, and I say nothing. I don't want to get to the point where I explode and our relationship ends for good, but I don't want to continue this relationship as it is. How can I handle this?

Diane Duthie - Lansing GalleryIce Fest has become an Ithaca tradition, an Ice Carving  celebration of cold weather.  This year's festival featured a speed ice carving contest, ice bar, music, and a twp block showpiece challenge.

I wasn't able to attend the 2018 ice festival, but am showing some of my favorite photos from the 2017 Ithaca Ice Festival. The weather was perfect to craft the ice sculptures and the crowds gathered to watch the artists at work.
