The Enfield Food Pantry has reopened its doors to the hundreds of residents who rely on its services after the community rallied together to donate $22,000 to upgrade the facility.

The pantry, which serves between 450 and 600 people a week, was shut down in June by the Food Bank of the Southern Tier because of a rodent infestation. But after widespread community support, the pantry reopened in July after contracting a pest management service, installing new shelving and a walk-in freezer and sealing and painting the building.

Within reachReally? Virginia Beach? How is THAT within reach?

Hey, if I can make it there – you might be able too!

Virginia Beach has everything you could possibly want – and for me, I wanted an AAmco transmission shop to fix my truck that broke on the Eastern shore of VA.

olive catBy Chloe Winter

My name is Olive. I'm a beautiful orange female cat with fluffy medium-length fur. I am looking for a home to call my own, where I can take my time settling in, because the world can be a scary place for a shy girl like me! I am hoping for a home without any dogs, because they frighten me, but another cat may be OK given a slow introduction between us. If you talk to me and offer a hand to sniff, I'll be your friend in no time! Check me out today!

posticon Milk Carton 'Sell-By' Dates May Become More Precise

The 'sell-by' and 'best-by' dates on milk cartons may soon become more meaningful and accurate. Cornell University food scientists have created a new predictive model that examines spore-forming bacteria and when they emerge, according to research published in the Journal of Dairy Science.

"Putting dates on milk cartons is a big issue, because consumers often discard the milk if it is past the sell-by date," said Martin Wiedmann, food safety professor and a senior author of the research. "Often there is little science behind those dates, as they are experience-based guesses. The goal of this research was to put good science to use, reduce food waste and reduce food spoilage."

Patric Tyrrell

When Lansing's Parks and Recreation Department doors opened Tuesday morning there wasn't any obvious difference.  The office looked the same.  But in actuality there was a huge difference -- Patrick Tyrrell had taken the helm as the Town's Park Superintendent and Recreation Director.  Tyrrell brings 18 years of experience in the department to the job, and he hit the ground running during one of the department's busiest seasons.

"I don't think you're going to see any big differences," Tyrrell says. "Nothing is going to shut down or change.  All the programs are going to keep running and things will keep happening the way they have been."

posticon Dear Margaret - Prefers not to be Promoted

dearmargaret I have a business assistant who has been with me for several years. I trust him implicitly. He knows the ins and outs of my business like no one else. He seems satisfied in his role as my right hand. I would like to promote him, but he seems adamant that he is satisfied in his current role. I'm having a hard time understanding this mindset. He doesn't seem to fear responsibility, but prefers to stay in the shadow. I know he could go far in this business. How can I coax him to see his value? This is a management issue I've never encountered.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced an additional $5 million is available to continue the support of critical improvement projects at New York's animal shelters. This is the second round of funding for the New York State Companion Animal Capital Fund, which will allow eligible organizations to make significant updates to their facilities to enhance animal care and health. A total of $10 million has been dedicated to the program since 2017.

"We are proud to provide animal shelters with additional funding to ensure pets across New York receive the care they need," Governor Cuomo said. "This funding will build on the $5 million awarded last year to shelters across the state, giving them the resources and tools they need to continue their important work of finding these pets a loving home in the Empire State."
