Quilters are a generous lot. They regularly give their quilts to friends and family, they donate quilts and handcrafts to charitable organizations, they share techniques and knowledge freely, and they organize service events to benefit the less fortunate around the world.

Even a casual foray into the quilting world presents myriad opportunities for charity. Poke around the quilting community on Pinterest or Instagram, for example, and you'll quickly find quilters who donate their work to soldiers, patients in hospitals and nursing homes, at-risk babies, or children in war-torn areas.

posticon Dear Margaret - Clearing My Conscience

dearmargaretDear Margaret: I've been estranged from my sister for the past 14 years. I found out a few months ago that I have a life threatening illness. My family takes grudge holding to the level of an art form, and my sister and I are no exceptions. However, if I don't regain my health, I worry that I'll leave this earth without a clear conscience. I don't have a particular religious affiliation and I'm not sure about my beliefs in a divine being. I simply don't want to depart with unresolved issues. I've called my sister on a few occasions and left messages each time, but she will not respond. Any ideas on how I can make this right?

Zuma1By Doug Scott

Hi! My name is Zuma! I would love to rub up against you and purr to tell you how happy I am. I am super playful, so I would love it if you get me some toys, but I should go to a home without younger children, since sometimes I get too excited with a swipe or two. I prefer to be the only cat in your house as well, so I can rule the roost! If you like headbutts then I am the cat for you, it is how I tell you that I adore you. I look forward to a home where I can get all the loving and petting I crave. If you are looking for a sweet, beautiful girl than I am the cat for you. Come in and say "Hi" to me

High cost is by far the most important health care issue for New Yorkers, and their concern about it is growing.

In a recent survey of a representative sample of New York state residents, 58 percent said the high cost of health care is their biggest concern. That's a rise of 12.6 percentage points from last year, according to a new study from the Cornell Institute for Healthy Futures (CIHF).

dearmargaretDear Margaret: I’m a 42 year old woman who is with a kind, loving and supportive husband. I have two great teenage children, live in a nice suburban house and have a good job. And I’m bored. There’s a guy at work that is showing romantic interest in me and I find myself daydreaming about how exciting it would be to have an extramarital affair. I know this would destroy my family, but I feel like I have needs that aren’t being met at home. I’m torn. I don’t want to make a mistake I can’t recover from. I feel like a horrible person for even entertaining these thoughts. What advice can you give me?

posticon 'Play it Again, Ithaca' Reuses Musical Instruments

music1The Fine Arts Booster Group (FABG) through its "Play it Again, Ithaca" program collects donated used musical instruments to support the Ithaca City School District (ICSD) music education program. Instruments donated to the FABG are professionally repaired, and become part of the ICSD collection of instruments available for free use to students in the district.

FABG and the ICSD provide students who might not otherwise have access to instruments an opportunity to participate in band or orchestra. The ICSD arts program allows students to take free instrumental lessons during school hours and participate in the school musical groups. FABG's "Play it Again, Ithaca" enhances the district's existing resources and enables the community to be "green" with this reuse of donated instruments.

scouts eagle allTroop 48 senior scouts, all of whom should receive Eagle Scout by the end of the year. Left to right: Ethan Buchanan (waiting for final Board of Review), Sean O'Neil, Toby Green, Nico Streb (the 3 recipients of the award this Wednesday) and Jacob Williamson (whose Court of Honor was reported on last week).

Pavilion F in Myer's Park was busy August 23rd with supporters of Lansing Troop 48 scouts. The evening was spent honoring the hard work of three young men receiving their Eagle Scout awards. The Eagle Scout is the highest advancement in Boy Scouting. In the words of the Eagle Scout promise, Eagles do their best each day to make their training an example, their rank and influence count strongly for better Scouting and for better citizenship in their troop, in their community and in their contacts with other people.

Sean O'Neil, Nico Streb and Toby Green were awarded the rank of Eagle in front of over 20 of their fellow Scouts. The three boys joined Lansing Troop 48 during 2010, although O'Neil and Streb had both experienced the fun of Cub Scouts in Lansing Pack 48 before joining the Boy Scouts. During their 7 years in the Troop the boys worked their way up through the ranks. They started with relatively simple tasks; learning many outdoor and survival skills, learning about citizenship and other life skills such as cooking and physical fitness. Each rank advances these skills and later ranks included the need to earn merit badges, engage in leadership positions within the troop and provide community service. To achieve each rank, the Scouts discussed their Scouting experiences with a board of adult leaders and parents.

Fire Department Carnival Cooking For Bicentennial

Steamed clams, hamburgers, hot dogs, hot sausage, salt potatoes, soda, and water.  About 10 to 15 fire department volunteers will be manning the grills tomorrow (September 9th) as Lansing celebrates its Bicentennial with an old fashioned community carnival.  The celebration is a throw back to the time when the  Lansing Fire Department used to host annual carnivals, combined with a sprinkle of the old 'Lansing Day' celebrations.  If you haven't seen a poster (or our Lansing Star article two weeks ago), Fire Commissioner Darrell Rhoads, who represents the Fire Department on the Bicentennial Committee, wants to make sure you know all about it.

"A lot of people were shocked in a good way," says Rhoads.  "They were surprised that the town is doing something like this again.  We went to the Concert in the park to raise money with a 50/50 raffle.  I told everybody I sold a ticket to about the event, the day, and the parade...  90% of them didn't know and were quite surprised and excited to see something like that is happening."
