ImageITHACA, NY — Babbage’s Basement and Einstein’s Attic, the Sciencenter’s computer and scientific equipment restoration and resale programs, welcomed their last regular customers on Saturday, October 18. A one-day final clearance sale is being planned for mid-November.

For the past 8 years, proceeds from the sale of refurbished computers, salvaged scientific equipment, and office furniture has supported the educational programs of the Sciencenter.  The reuse operation was made possible by dedicated Babbage’s Basement volunteers and by Emerson Power Transmission’s donation of space for processing donated materials for retail sale.  The Emerson building that housed Babbage’s Basement and Einstein’s Attic is being repurposed.

“We are extremely grateful to Emerson for donating space for this program. We also want to thank the dozens of dedicated volunteers who ran Babbage’s Basement and offered their expertise and hard work. The items donated by local businesses, organizations, and individuals, plus the financial support of our customers has helped us grow the educational programs at the museum,” states Charlie Trautmann, executive director of the Sciencenter.

The Sciencenter and Babbage’s Basement will no longer be accepting regular donations of used computers and other electronic equipment. Computers can be recycled locally through Tompkins County’s Solid Waste Division.
