Zoe Dubrow won the Grand Prize in the 3rd Annual Ithaca Cupcake Baking Content held in the Ithaca Commons Saturday October 13. Her 'Strawberry Surprise Cupcakes' contained a cored whole strawberry filled with salted butterscotch. The concoctions were topped by a brown sugar cream cheese frosting, decorated with a chocolate fan, sliced strawberry, mint leaves, and a mini chocolate strawberry macaron.

Jennifer Dobmeier won 2nd Place with 'Key Lime Pie Cupcake', a Key lime-scented vanilla cake with a lime curd filling was topped with a Key lime buttercream frosting. Erin Morris won 3rd Place with German chocolate cupcakes topped by a swirl of pink icing made from homemade jam using local farmer's market strawberries. Kyra O'Toole won the Youth Award for 18s & Under. She overcame tough competition with a set of chocolate cheesecake cupcakes, with an Oreo crust, chocolate cream filling, chocolate cream frosting.

The contest was organized by The Sophie Fund, established in memory of Cornell University art student Sophie Hack MacLeod to support mental health initiatives aiding young people in the greater Ithaca community. GreenStar Natural Foods Market was the contest's premier sponsor again this year. Alternatives Federal Credit Union and La Tourelle Hotel, Bistro and Spa also co-sponsored the contest.

Various community organizations were on hand to participate in the contest, including the Mental Health Association in Tompkins County, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Central New York Chapter, and Cornell Minds Matter, a student mental health club at Cornell University.

Several other student groups from Cornell University and Ithaca College also supported the contest. They included Active Minds at Ithaca College, and Alpha Phi Omega Gamma Chapter, Phi Sigma Pi, Reflect at Cornell, and Pre-Professional Association Towards Careers in Health (PATCH) at Cornell.

"The Sophie Fund has meant a lot to many Cornell students," said Winnie Ho, president of Cornell's Alpha Phi Omega Gamma Chapter. "To have a community supporter who not only looks after our organizations but after us as people means the world. At every single turn, we can all make that difference. It starts with taking care of each other, it starts with ending that stigma, it starts with reaching out to people that you love."

"The Sophie Fund has been a champion of Cornell Minds Matter, we can't thank them enough for all the things they've done for us," added Matthew Jirsa, co-president of Cornell Minds Matter and co-chair of Cornell's Mental Health Awareness Week running from October 12-19.
