WHETHER OR NOT: We hear this redundancy from the “best” people, who often also say, “I feel badly,” and the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired treats many famous patients who say whether or not.
We treat this disorder with linguistic immersion, bombarding them with correct sentences until they sound right to our patients. For example:
I don’t care whether you like it.
I wonder whether we’ll arrive in time.
I’m trying to decide whether to go.
Do you know whether you can speak well?
