ANNULAR RING:  Any veteran of science class has seen this term, referring to that collar thing around the stems of many mushrooms.

Intensive research at the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired - actually, a patient checked a dictionary - reveals to the waiting world that annular means ring shaped.

So annular ring means ring shaped ring, and is about as inspired a term as round circle.  But then, in chapters of the same textbooks, where the esteemed authors cover volcanoes (the ones with volcanic lava), arrows point to a central core.  As opposed to that core on the outside, right?

Science is so awesome.
