ImageThe Tompkins County Public Library will kick-off 2009 with a spectacular exhibit of origami and engineered papercrafts by world-renowned artist and physicist Robert Lang, the Cornell Origami Club and local members of the Japanese community.

The last decade of the 20th Century has seen a revolution in the development and application of mathematical techniques to origami, the centuries-old Japanese art of paper-folding. Physicist Robert J. Lang is one of the world's leading masters of origami, and a pioneer in the marriage of origami and mathematics with designs of great detail, complexity and realism. Lang is one of the featured speakers at this year's Light in Winter Festival.

Lang's creations have been made available for viewing at the Library through the Tompkins County Public Library Foundation through a generous gift from the Brooks Family Foundation. In addition to the origami pieces on display, several pop-up books from the collection of Barbara Kretzmann will also be included in the exhibit. These books further illustrate the intricate art of paper engineering.

An opening reception for the exhibit and for the Library's next art exhibit, "Seeing in the Dark", will be held on Friday, January 23, 2009 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. The reception will feature an origami workshop offered by members of the Cornell Origami Club. Lang will also attend the reception from 5:30 to 6:30 PM.

To further enhance patron appreciation of the origami exhibit, TCPL is also hosting a workshop from noon to 4:00 PM, Saturday, January 17. This workshop is free and open to the public and is appropriate for all ages and skill levels. It is being facilitated by members of the local Japanese community.

The exhibit will be on display through January.
