ImageRusty and Max are best friends from high school. When Rusty questions a large, blank piece of cardboard that Max is working on, an entanglement of language ensues that explores the complexity of communication. Max is trying to start something, but will he ever get through his conversation with Rusty to begin it?

From etymology to semantics, Hemingway to grog, Republicans to Democrats, everything is discussed in this whirlwind conversation that will leave audiences gasping for breath. Slightly political, slightly analytical, completely hysterical, A PLAY ON WORDS is a must-see for anyone who has ever had a wonderfully infuriating conversation with a close friend.

Kitchen Theatre audiences are familiar with Brian Dykstra’s other works, including STRANGERHORSE, CLEAN ALTERNATIVES, and this season’s premiere production of THE TWO OF YOU.   He was writer/performer in the provocative THE JESUS FACTOR and also appeared in the production of his earth-friendly play CLEAN ALTERNATIVES alongside NYC-based Mark Boyette who plays his nemesis in A PLAY ON WORDS.   Dykstra is also remembered for his performance in David Wiltse’s A MARRIAGE MINUET.

Dykstra’s artistic partner/collaborator, NYC-based director Margarett Perry returns to direct A PLAY ON WORDS. Perry has had many successful productions in Ithaca including CLEAN ALTERNATIVES, A MARRIAGE MINUET, STRANGERHORSE, OLD TIMES, the 2008 summer revival of THE SOUP COMES LAST, and the recent encore production of TONY & THE SOPRANO.

A PLAY ON WORDS will feature set design by Kelly Syring; lighting design by E.D. Intemann, Senior Lecturer and Resident Lighting Designer at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts (A MARRIAGE MINUET, THE TWO OF YOU, TONY & THE SOPRANO at the Kitchen); and costume design by Hannah Kochman OLD TIMES, BED NO BREAKFAST, THE CLEAN HOUSE, among others).
