ImageJ.J. Abrams vision of Star Trek takes liberties with the classic series' well loved story, but this movie is so packed with action you barely have time to notice.  Abrams takes the Starship Enyterprise along an alternative time line, which is supposed to account for the discrepencies.  Without printing spoilers I will say that one difference in particular is, given the more than 45 years of Star Trek lore, is a bit jarring to anyone who has seen even a few of the previous offerings.

That said, this movie is so action packed that new viewers and long time fans alike don't have time to worry about such things, or even some new ones like James Kirk being promoted so quickly.  From the first scene to the end this movie keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Abrams knew he couldn't alienate the fan base too much, and the casting is generally quite good.  If you are comparing the new to the original Karl Urban is the most believable as a young Doctor McCoy.  Simon Pegg is hysterical as Scotty, and Chris Pine makes a believable Kirk.
