ImageThe Tompkins County Public Library will host acclaimed New York City-based actor Anthony Newfield for a performance of his play, “Steinbeck and the Land,” Monday, October 5, 2009 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM in the BorgWarner Community Room.

Newfield’s credits include TV, film and Broadway and Off-Broadway productions.  He played Jim Casy in the Moscow Art Theatre’s performance of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath and wrote “Steinbeck and the Land” in commemoration of the centennial of Steinbeck’s birth.

First presented at the New York Public Library in 2002, “Steinbeck and the Land” has since been performed in venues from New York to California, including Steinbeck’s childhood home and the National Steinbeck Center.  Masterfully exploring the relationship between Steinbeck and the land, particularly the Salinas Valley and Monterey Bay areas of California, Newfield’s play looks at how geography shaped Steinbeck as a man and helped influence his writing.

This program is being held in conjunction with the 2009 Community Read of Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath and has been made possible by the Brooks Family Foundation through a generous gift to the Tompkins County Public Library Foundation.
