ImageThe Wells College Choral Ensembles will begin their 2009-10 season of performances with a Fall Concert for Friends and Family Weekend on Saturday, October 31st at 5:15 P.M. in Barler Recital Hall on the college campus in Aurora.  Admission to the concert is free, and the public is cordially invited to attend.

The three college singing groups, consisting of the women’s ensemble, the men’s ensemble, and the coeducational Concert Choir, will present a wide variety of choral music under the direction of Professor Crawford R. Thoburn of Wells’ music department.  The ensembles will be accompanied by pianist Russell Posegate, Lecturer in Music at Wells.

The women’s and men’s ensembles will sing works from their own repertoires, then combine as the Concert Choir to perform music for mixed voices.  Included on the program will be separate works by J.S. Bach, Adrian Batten, Gabriel Faure, Felix Mendelssohn, Ludwig Spohr, Thomas Tallis, Samuel Wesley, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Two extended works on the program sung by the Concert Choir will be the “Missa Brevis in d minor” by the 18th century composer Antonio Lotti, and “A Christmas Triptych,” original settings of three 15th century English texts by the Concert Choir’s conductor, Crawford R. Thoburn.  These published compositions have been performed extensively and commercially recorded, but this will be their first live performance in Aurora.

Rounding out the program will be performances of folksongs arranged by Morten J. Luvaas, Arthur Somerville and Norman Luboff, and African-American Spirituals arranged by William Dawson and Jester Hairston.

Friends and Family Weekend events range from speakers and performances to hayrides, shopping excursions, and vineyard tours.
