ImageAlice Eve Cohen, the NYC playwright, actor, and puppeteer whose plays for young audiences HANNAH & THE HOLLOW CHALLAH, THE BALINESE FROG PRINCESS, and adult piece, THIN WALLS, have been enjoyed by many at the Kitchen Theatre, is returning with her hit show THE PARROT. We are thrilled to offer it to Kitchen Theatre audiences in our Family Fare series for a limited engagement - three performances only: Saturday, November 7 at 1pm & 3pm and Sunday, November 8 at 1pm.

THE PARROT is Cohen’s own version of an ancient Italian folk tale that during the Middle Ages was as popular as the Bible. She plays all the characters in this comic drama that features a fearless female protagonist, hand puppets, costumes and props from found objects, physical comedy, and even a solo for two recorders. The twisty story-within-a-story tells of a romantic parrot with a mind of his own who befriends a peasant girl and outwits the evil king through his brilliant storytelling. The parrot's story is of a courageous girl who travels the world performing courageous deeds, saving princes and bringing joy to every kingdom she visits. The play moves fluidly between two fantastic stories: the story about the parrot, and the incredible story the parrot tells.

Cohen is an internationally acclaimed solo theatre artist, playwright, and now a best-selling memoirist. What I Thought I Knew (Viking, 2009), Cohen’s memoir, was selected as one of Oprah Magazine’s 25 Best Books of Summer. Her plays and solo theatre pieces have been produced at theatres, colleges, and schools throughout the U.S. including New York Theatre Workshop, New Georges, Dance Theatre Workshop, Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Philadelphia Women’s Theatre Festival, LA Women’s Theatre Festival, and at international theatre festivals in Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Israel and Trinidad.

The recipient of two NYS Council for the Arts playwriting fellowships, a First Light Fellowship from DTW, grants from NYSCA and the National Endowment for the Arts, and an Emmy Award Commendation, Cohen has brought her experience and expertise to The New School in New York City where she teaches courses in solo theatre. She has written for PBS, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., CBS, and CTW, and holds a BA from Princeton University and an MFA in Creative Writing from The New School University.
