FIRST STARTED: As a senior therapist at the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired, I wish to note the passing of one of the institute's mentors, Edwin Newman.  He was honored when we opened the Edwin Newman Clinic for Temporal Retentives, and we honor his memory in our work there.

Potential patients at this clinic have never started or begun anything.  They insist upon using redundancies like "when I first started," or "when I first began." Their vacation stories always begin with "When we first arrived..." They lovingly recall how they first met their spouses.  They even refer to those events as past memories.

Please help. In memory of Edwin Newman, please contribute to his clinic through the newspaper you're reading.  A language is a terrible thing to waste.
