kitchen_front120Always his little brother's keeper, Ogun scratches out a living in his auto repair shop. His troublesome free spirited brother Oshoosi is fresh out of jail on parole. Can one brother succeed if the other fails? Can one be free if the other is imprisoned? Set in contemporary small-town rural Louisiana and infused with Yoruba mythology, The Brothers Size is a timeless story about two brothers whose hopes and dreams are pinned on each other. Hailed as "too good to be perfect" by the New York Times, playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney is a brilliant new voice in American theatre. The Brothers Size will be performed at the Kitchen Theatre from October 27 through November 7, 2010.

The 30-year-old playwright’s work is being produced in major theaters in the U.S. and abroad. The Brothers Size has been seen at Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, The Public Theatre in New York, the Magic Theatre in San Francisco, and the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, among others, and reviewers have hailed McCraney as a major new voice. The San Francisco Chronicle says The Brothers Size“ confirms McCraney's status as one of the most exciting new voices in the American theater,” and the Chicago Tribune says, “Like August Wilson (who was a mentor), McCraney is a poet, an epic, innately theatrical poet, who hears the cries of the vulnerable, the dispossessed, the pulled-in-many-directions.” The Kitchen Theatre is thrilled to be bringing this exciting new playwright’s work to Ithaca for the first time.

Jesse Bush, a longtime Kitchen Theatre collaborator, and currently Associate Artistic Director at the Hangar Theatre directs the Kitchen Theatre production. Recent directorial credits include Kitchen Theatre: Happy Days, The Drawer Boy, and The Santaland Diaries that will return to the KTC in November/December once again starring Karl Gregory, among others. At the Hangar Theatre: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Once on this Island.

The Brothers Size features a stellar cast of three New York City actors. Returning to the Kitchen for the third time is multitalented actor/poet/playwright Darian Dauchan in the role of Elegba, former cellmate of younger brother, Oshoosi Size. Dauchan has been seen at the Kitchen performing his own plays, Entertainer’s Eulogy and Media Madness. A graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, he has appeared on Broadway (Twentieth Century starring Alec Baldwin and Anne Heche) and Off Broadway theatre (Jean Cocteau Rep., Classical Theatre of Harlem). TV credits include “Law and Order” and Nickelodeon's “Bet the House”. Joining Dauchan are two new faces to Ithaca: New York City actors Samuel Smith as Ogun, and Mack Exilus as Oshoosi. Both bring with them an extensive background in theater, film and television work.

The Brothers Size Scenic and Lighting Design is by Ithaca College graduate David Arsenault. The Stage Manager is LaShawn Keyser.

All performances of The Brothers Size will be performed at the Kitchen Theatre’s brand new location – 417 W. State / W. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street, in downtown Ithaca, NY.
