As a “play within a play” set in a 1936 radio station, the production provides a look into the routine day of a cast of colorful voice actors and actresses as they perform “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” for their listeners’ enjoyment.
“We’ve taken this Halloween favorite and have set it against a backdrop of fabulous 1930s period costumes and home-made sound effects. This production is sure to provide a rich evening of entertainment!” says Director Siouxsie Easter, a professor of theatre at Wells College. The play’s set was designed by Set and Lighting Designer Professor Joe DeForest.
“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” tells the story of schoolmaster Ichabod Crane and his attempts to woo the beautiful Katrina as he deals with his superstitions and fright of the infamous specter, the Headless Horseman.
Prior to the main stage production of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” there will be a short, twenty-minute play called “The Words Upon the Window-Pane,” adapted and directed and by David Dannenfelser from a play by William Butler Yeats. Taking place
19th century Ireland, “The Words Upon the Window-Pane” begins with the members of the Dublin Spiritualists’ Association coming together to hold a séance in the house of the deceased writer Jonathan Swift. However, when a restless spirit interrupts the séance, Jonathan Swift’s life and loves are re-examined in an eerie performance of loss and regrets.
There will be a fifteen minute intermission between “The Words Upon the Window-Pane” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” which are performed by the students of Wells College and several Ithaca residents. Local band Merry Mischief will be performing for the audience’s enjoyment during that time.
